At Retail DJ, I talk a lot about getting dressed “to” something, particularly good music that inspires one to go out, dance, and have a good time. But what if you could find that kind of diverse, fun, and danceable music when you went out? Look no further. I’ve got what you’ve been searching for all along.
On the night of Wednesday, August 4th, Retail DJ presents . . .

Somehow in a cosmic-sized lapse in memory, I forgot to post one of the big events this week: Holy Ghost! (in their FIRST NYC headlining event!)+ Justin Miller + Neon Indian + Jacques Renault + Stretch Armstrong are performing tonight at Le Poisson Rouge!
It’s not to late to get tickets online (and they are $15 at the door). If you haven’t seen one or more of these guys perform before, please do check them out. Tonight is one of those moments when I wish I had a clone or someone who could be a surrogate version of me, but through whom I could experience everything. Nevertheless, nothing like that has been created yet, so I might need to live vicariously through some of the folks who read Retail DJ and who aren’t crazy tired tonight. GO GO GO!
I saw EZRAKH perform at House of Yes recently, and homeboy “tore it up,”‘ are we say in the South. He’ll be back again this Friday to DJ for the (Un)official Afro-Punk Fest Kick-off Party. King’s County, Moruf “Moo,” and DJ Chuck will also be performing, so if you’re in Brooklyn or just feel like taking a trip down to Bushwick to dance your ass off, get ‘er done! I can attest that a House of Yes party with EZRAKH at the musical helm is one you will wake up sore from the next day. The party is raw, the beats are contagious, and the vibe is friendly, open, and energetic.
Here’s a little reminder of his skills to get you excited. I recommend you download it considering that EZRAKH is so prolific that before you can download your favorite mix, a new one will be up in its place!)
As per usual, I am highlighting my top show picks for this week, but this time around, I’m giving a shoutout for Pride. Yes, it’s that time of year folks. The Pride Parade is this weekend, meaning this week is going to be chock full of extra parties for the folks within the LGBT community and their allies (both in advocacy and the need to dance dance dance!)

I recently received an email from a set of female DJs who are putting on quite the show tomorrow. From 1-4 pm, DJs Lil Ray, Krunk Pony, and Whitney Day will be doing a live broadcast on UStream in Brooklyn, and you’re invited!
For more details, check out the facebook event page . If you can plug in your headphones while you’re at the office or blast your speakers at home, more power to you!
To get you excited, here’s more info on the DJs and a little bit of their work:
About Lil Ray:
Lil Ray grew up on the Ft. Lauderdale Bat Mitzvah scene, which might have started her dance party obsession. In 1999, she relocated to Atlanta where she discovered southern style beats and all night underground dance parties. She got behind the decks in 2008 and quickly made a name for herself. She moved to Brooklyn at the end of 2009, and that’s when things really took off. She bounces around NYC every week, playing funky electro, hip hop, booty bass, and whatever weird and wonderful new dance genre she came across the day before.
At 6’2” this glamazon will keep you on your toes. She spins a fluid high energy set that includes tastes of disco, funk, breakbeat, hip-hop, b-more, electro, house and smart re-dits of those guilty pleasure tracks. Known for busting out her clavé or a move on the dance floor–she is soon to be rocking a party near you.
Whitney Day does it for the love of music. A native NYC-er, she began playing and performing music early on while studying at LaGuardia, the ‘FAME’ High School. After graduating college with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, she went back to her music roots to compose and mix music for television & film.
After years in the club and party scene in NYC as a party-goer she made the leap from the dance floor to the decks. With an instinct for reading crowds, she blends her eclectic music taste to create surprising mixes and on-the-fly mash-ups.
There are some repeat offenders this time around, and they’re all worth checking out! Trouble & Bass is throwing yet another (most likely partylicious) show at Santos, featuring an artist by the name of Dominique Young Unique who will then go on to perform the next night with Switch (!!!) and Viking (second show at Webster Hall in recent months). On top of that, Hercules and Love Affair (whom I have seen live plenty of times) will be making folks drop it like it’s hot this weekend. Oh, and did I mention that AFROJACK will be here? It’s going to be a very good set of days, even if theygive you a sense of deja vu.

The “Bootie” parties have become a worldwide sensation, and Public Assembly is fortunate enough to be hosting the first ever Bootie Brooklyn! I am super excited about this, mainly because a) I heard about it first through DJ Leo Justi (who will be playing for the Rio branch of the party, Bootie Rio, June 11th), and b) I caught wind of an amazing mix that the Bootie Rio crew posted on their SoundCloud page. I’ve included the tracklist ABOVE the jump this time so readers can get a good sense of all the hard work that goes into putting together a set like this. Beatmatching is one thing, but keymatching, melodymatching, and mixing are quite another.
This mix, which was done by Brazilian DJs André Paste, Leo Justi, Faroff, Brutal Redneck,, Lucio K and João Brasil, gets to all the fans–from folks who like rock and roll, to rap, to funk carioca, to electronica; there’s something there for any and everyone. I am truly impressed.

DJ Ayres is playing tonight at Savalas in Williamsburg. You’d be crazy to miss it. Check out more on DJ Ayres at his website, myspace page, and here in this interview he did along with DJ colleague Tittsworth for MTV Canada:
DJ Ayres is well-known in NYC for his awesome party The Rub (so awesome, in fact, that it has its own website) as well as his remixing, refixing, and reworking of just about everything, his specialty being Baltimore-style club, house, and hip hop-laced musical goodness. So again, um…why on earth would you miss this?
Support the artists we’ve profiled here at Retail DJ and check out the Almost Famous Showcase tonight at Le Poisson Rouge! Dash Speaks and NSR (whom we interviewed, photographed, and had bless us with their mixes) will be performing tonight along with many more. Tickets $15

Every weekend at the Hester Street Fairin the Lower East Side, ITSA, a rotating set of super-creative and incredibly talented designers/artists will have quite the booth presence. It’s coordinated by Richard Burroughs, whose own talents seem limitless, and whom I was fortunate enough to meet while he DJed at BEast during aRetail DJ interview and photoshoot we did withDrlkt Freddie.
If you’re in the area, be sure to check out the ITSA folks. Their pieces are fantastic!

When I first received the invite via GBH for the N.A.S.A. + Dave 1 of Chromeo show, I ignored it, thinking, “Hey, I have heard a ton of Chromeo, and have no idea who N.A.S.A. is. PLUS I am exhausted. I may not go.” But then I took a little MySpace music break and discovered that I had indeed heard of N.A.S.A. by way of some incredible mixes I had heard back in the day. It turns out that they supplied music to a ton of my favorite mixes and had somehow snuck beyond my radar (due to my not having read the tracklists a while back). BAD RETAIL DJ, I know!
So despite my not having given them props earlier, here’s a little shoutout to the boys at N.A.S.A., and I am not talking about the space scientists. This US/Brazil DJ duo has remixed a ton of songs and collaborated with artists like Kanye West, Lykke Li, Mr. Oizo, MIA, Santogold, and Spankrock. AKA, they can hold their own.
Check out more of N.A.S.A.’s work on their MySpace page (you are sure to recognize a few of the tracks) and see them live tonight for $1 at Webster Hall. P.S. Here is some of their stuff:
Great track “Whachadoin’” that somehow manages to mashup sounds from rock, funk carioca (“baile funk”), and breakbeat. . .
and the Mr. Oizo remix of their track “Strange Enough” (ft. WuTang Clan)
