Upcoming Shows: Green Velvet, Shomi Noise, & More!

28 Apr

Soo many great events this weekend! In a trend I have noticed in recent months, all the really good shows are happening at the end of the month. Luckily, I saved up my energy and will be partying down. Here’s a mini-guide:

Friday:

Classixx + Nancy Whang @ Webster Hall

Lil Ray @ Crave Wine Bar (check out DJ KrunkPony there on Saturday too!)

Green Velvet & Jamie Jones @ Good Units

Saturday:

A-Trak & Kid Sister @ Terminal 5

Shomi Noise (The Wretched Party! launch!) @ East River Bar, Brooklyn

and if you’re in. . .

Berlin

or Rio

or Ontario

or Amsterdam

Upcoming Shows: House the Place

3 Mar

House music will be in full effect this weekend with the next few shows. Of the many parties opening their doors for the public to enjoy a few nights of freedom, the two I have no problem endorsing and, in fact, encouraging you to check out are WORK and Let’s Play House, both excellent regular parties where:

1. The DJs care about the music they play and are so talented it hurts

2. New music is previewed and older music is cherished

3. Dancing is the norm

4. The good vibes are impossible to miss

WORK, which is hosted by DJs Eli Escobar and Lloydski, both house and disco DJs/Producers with plenty of musical accomplishments under their respective belts, takes place as subMercer, the club beneath the Mercer Hotel in Soho, tonight! If you are free, do not miss this. In fact, clear a few things off your schedule to get there. 3.3.11 INVITE

Here’s a little example of how it all goes down:

and

Let’s Play House, which is hosted by Jacques Renault, another DJ/producer with lots of experience (including many an EP, set, and remix), has taken place in several venues, most notably a “secret location” in Williamsburg. This week, the location is very well-known: The Union Square Ballroom in Manhattan. Legend Cosmo Vitelli, Kaos, and Drew Heffron will be in charge of making you dance. 3.4.11 INVITE

Special Event + Upcoming Shows

I only support the artists, performances, DJs, and designers I believe in and trust to deliver the goods. This endorsement then, is like any other.

This Friday, February 11th, my friends and colleagues Yvonne Fly Onakeme Etaghene and DJ Shomi Noise are teaming up for an amazing show in Harlem. Fly will be presenting photography, video art, and a live performance with Shomi on board to DJ! They are both super talented, so I know it’s going to be hot. Something To WERK (out) To . . .

19 Jan

Today I was back in the gym for the first time in an embarrassingly long time. I, justifiably, blame it on all the time and energy I devoted to grad school applications, moving, and other life activities that put the gym on the backburner. BUT as it’s 2011 now, I felt that bit of January guilt and, even more so, my bank account yelling from a distance “GO to the gym or that money they take out from your account every month might as well be put in a trashcan and lit on fire,” so I hauled ass to the land of muscleheads and models and took a punching bag to task. While boxing, my soundtrack came c/o France’s Mustard Pimp, whose epic mixes guarantee anything from old school nostalgia to a headbanging blast.

The latest mixtape series from MP goes by the name Catastrophe. A fitting title, no less, for a mix that made me do some serious damage today at the gym. Hopefully it helps you as well as you attempt to fulfill the demands of your new year’s resolutions (follow the links for the tracklists; click to stream / click the small arrow on the right to download):

By the way, don’t forget to show off your new body (or old one, whichever is best) at WERK!: The Retail DJ 1-Year Anniversary (1.27.11 @ Gallery Bar). Look at it this way, at least dancing is a heavy-duty WERKout (sorry, couldn’t resist). RSVP here

Random Aside: The Retail DJ Mascot

14 Jan

Brodinski (the dog, not the DJ)

I’ve been a bit MIA in the past week, despite my return to the site, mainly because I’ve been on vacation. But there’s another reason I haven’t had the free time to sit and type: Brodinski.

But when I say “Brodinski,” I am actually not referring to the French DJ, but instead the dog who has been named after him. Yes, I broke down and got a puppy. In between Brodinski (the dog, not the DJ) trying to eat the keys on the computer and learning to poop and pee in the right spot (aka on the paper and NOT on the hardwood floor), blogging is a little bit hard. However, I’m back in the saddle and ready to do some damage (the good kind, of course).

Be on the lookout for more posts as well as the January podcast, as well as new features int he coming weeks. ALSO, please do not forget to RSVP for WERK! The Retail DJ 1-Year Anniversary Party. Come out and get your dance on.

Yes, indeed, Retail DJ has turned 1-year old. But after all this hard work, I certainly will not be celebrating alone. . .

I’ll be partying with the help of 8 friends, and you and yours are invited to come!

Join me on Thursday, 1/27/11 for a party you won’t forget:

Special Event: Warehouse Saturday at House of Yes

6 Aug

EZRAKH sent me this info on a party he was spinning at House of Yes on Saturday, then it blew up. Every five seconds, a new DJ/special guest was added until the lineup looked like something even more fierce than it already was. On top of EZRAKH playing (and for those of you who have heard his mixes or saw him live at the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase on Wednesday, you know this is a very very good thing), DJ Reck, K-Swift, and DJ Sega are DJing. In other words, everyone’s going to be walking a little funny Sunday morning. . . that is, if their feet still work at all after all that dancing.

DO NOT MISS THIS. I repeat: DO NOT MISS THIS!

IT’S ONLY $7. You’d be crazy to pass this up. Oh, and did I mention the party got a shoutout in the Village Voice?!?! Yeah. Peep that.

Special Event: Nacotheque! Tonight! (and you can still win tickets!)

30 Jul

Nacotheque, the infamous Latin alternative music party, is happening tonight! Check out the flyer below and be sure to stop by. With a ticket price so low, it makes me think of that song in which the calls out “If you’ve got $5 in your pocket, lemme hear you say, ‘hell yeah!’” But hey, if you don’t, but you still want to go, see below for how you can win tickets for you and a friend to tonight’s show! Email me with the answer by 7 pm and they’re yours!!!

Listen to Amylulita’s Exclusive Retail DJ “What’s Good” Interview and answer this question: What is the name of the international music party Amylulita threw BEFORE Nacotheque? If you find the answer, email me: retaildj@gmail.com and the tickets are all yours :-)

By the way, check out this sick promo mix Amylulita put together for the show! I found myself singing along and dancing the whole way through. The tracklist on its own is enough to make you scream with glee, so press play or download the thing so you can do it in the comfort of your own home as you get ready for Nacotheque tonight as opposed to at your desk:

Get Dressed to This: My Humps

29 Jul

Fergie Ferg? Nah . . .

This is day two in the countdown until the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase and I came prepared and bearing gifts: my humps.

In this case, when I say “my humps,” I am not talking about that Black Eyed Peas song with Fergie at the helm, I am talking about a twisted, structured take on the tulip dress by AllSaints Spitalfields and a fabulous  mix by Camel that incorporates tech house and classic house with such smooth grace that it gave me chills on a hot and humid day.

Though this dress and its structure is quite rigid and dark (the dress is stiff and corsetted at the waist and more pronounced areas), the cut is still sexy without losing its charm. It can be dressed down with more brightly colored jewelry or made more intense with darker metals and accessories. Considering that this set of Get Dressed to This posts are about easing you all into fall, I figured I’d make a compromise with a light yet intense approach :-)

I hope you enjoy this mix and outfit as much as I had picking them!

Get Dressed to This: Gothic Goodness

28 Jul

As promised, I am adding a Get Dressed to This post each night leading up to the Retail DJ Get Dressed for This Showcase on August 4th!

This first installment involves a mix that comes to us c/o the Round Table Knights. Their live set at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona packs in a ton of soulful house grooves and techno that will make you feel sexy as you get ready to go out and remind you that even after a long day’s work, your energy level is all in your head (as this mix will surely elevate it.

There is no tracklist, but trust me on this one, if you like good music, you’ll like this set.

In addition to the killer music, I’ve put together a chic yet playful outfit with the central piece from AllSaints Spitalfields. It’s perfect for any parties that lead into the fall, combining the fun of summer plaid with the subtle hues of autumn. Though layered and form-fitting, the item is made of light-weight wool and is smooth on the body, allowing the skin to breathe as one moves.

Enjoy, and see you August 4th!

Get Dressed to This: Mega Post!

28 Jul

In anticipation of the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase on August 4th, I am putting up a new “Get Dressed to This” each and every night between now and the party!

Why the switch in prepositions, you may ask? Well, during the “Get Dressed to This” post, I include a great mix for you to listen to while you are getting ready to go out, something for you to get dressed TO, plus an outfit to inspire you as you put together your own. But for this party, the DJs and the mixing will be live, right before your eyes and ears, so it’s something you’ll need to get dressed FOR. The event is the end result.

This week, I want to build your excitement for the Get Dressed for This Showcase with a mix each night and a new outfit to get ready for fall. Yes, fall! It’s right around the corner, so some of the outfits during this week’s megaposting will be to inspire you for the upcoming season.

I listened to hundreds of songs and mixes as of late to filter out all the garbage and put up only the best, so you have a lot to look forward to! A bulk of the clothing will be by ALLSAINTS SPITALFIELDS as a thank you to them for a) supplying beautiful clothes, but also b) for being the one place to meet my dress needs for the party!  They are truly a godsend.

So get ready, folks. A nightly set of music and fashion is coming your way starting tonight, so be on the lookout!

Beijos!
