The XX – “Islands”

21 Apr

There is a new video out by the XX, who happen to be DJing at Le Poisson Rouge tomorrow night (!!!), for their song “Islands.” While I am a little sad that I found the video on mtv.com today while looking at dumb reality shows, I definitely am glad that I came across it. The song is pretty dynamic on its own, but the video adds an interesting touch because of its subtle changes with each bar.

Have a look: The XX – “Islands”

Nacho Lovers

I really like Nacho Lovers, the DJ duo from Canada that consistently puts out amazing house mixes, some of which we have  featured here, and many of which you will find on blogs all over the web. They occasionally do work separately, and I was fortunate enough to come across such a mix a few days back.

Andrew Ross, one half of Nacho Lovers, dropped this mix recently for Old Gold Boutique in Montreal, which contains a ton of fun old school tracks as well as some remixed newbies and a whole lot of greatness. As per usual, this mix is full of win.

Andrew Ross – Old Gold Transmission #9: Winter Warm Up (right click/save target as)

5 – Talking Heads – Burning Down The House (Alternate Version)

7 – The Revenge – Just Be Good to Me
8 – Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down (Aggro Mix)
9 – Rocha – Hands Of Love (Harvey’s Downstairs Mix-Up)

Get Dressed to This: Vintage Finds

25 Feb

This weekend, there is an amazing vintage clothing and accessories extravaganza going on in Brooklyn!

Here’s more info from In Your Closet NYC:

We’re going to be participating in a 3 day Vintage sale starting [this] weekend, curated by our friends over at Jelly NYC!
Other vendors include The Shiny Squirrel, Bonnie English, Brooklyn Rehab and Sweet Virginia.

At the vintage sale, expect lots of new vintage goods from us, more than what we have in our online store. We’ve been saving up just for this sale!
It’s going to start Saturday February 27th – Monday March 1st, each day 12 – 8
located at 522 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211

In order to get you all pumped for this amazing sale, I’ve decided to base this week’s Get Dressed to This around one of the amazing pieces I found on the Bonnie English Etsy Site and a genius mix by Franki Chan for URB Magazine (which features a ton of throwback tunes, some seriously vintage samples,  and a lot of hot new tracks you may have heard HERE once or twice :-) :

FRANKI CHAN -  EXCLUSIVE MIX FOR URB MAGAZINE  (click to dl/play)

tracklist can be found below and in the Music Archive

1. Gold Pearl Medallion Brooch Flower Chain Fringe Indie Party Necklace, Bonnie English (Etsy page), $107 USD: Wow, could they have picked a longer name? I guess it makes sense, though, considering the many twists, turns, and features of this beautiful necklace.

2. Time Travel Dress, Modcloth, $78 USD: What a fitting name for a vintage-inspired dress from Mod Cloth. The periwinkle and gold vertical stripes are a cute added touch for this comfy but stylish piece. It’s satin-y finish also makes it great for adding a little shine to a night out.

3. Nine West “Naughty” Black Patent Leather Pointed-Toe Flat, Piperlime, $59 USD: While these shoes are a bit understated, their patent leather helps bring the outfit together. The necklace is practically an outfit on its own, however, so pairing it with shoes that are over-the-top would distract and confuse the viewer (and maybe even the wearer!).

While the look above is more day and drinks, though it can clearly travel on over to night and dancing with the right makeup (and swagger), I thought I’d add one more amazing dress from Mod Cloth (seriously, there are so many adorable and affordable pieces on their site right now, you’d be crazy to not at least go take  a peek). Just throw off the necklace, change the dress, and voila! Instant night readiness:

Shakudo Dress, Mod Cloth, $72 USD

Retail DJ February Tracklist: A Tale of Two Hearts

3 Feb

February is a month of many events: President’s Day, Black History Month, Leap Year, Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, sometimes Carnaval/Mardi Gras, and many more. But what I think of most when I think of February is Valentine’s Day. It’s a time of love, fake sentiments as expressed in hues of pink and red, sincerity, disappointment, expectations, and emotional bankruptcy. It’s a busy month for the brain, but especially for the heart. In respecting our country’s tradition of reminding us to honor the ones we love and to be jealous when the vase of flowers doesn’t end up on our desks, I thought I’d follow suit with a more realistic take on Valentine’s Day. This month’s Retail DJ Tracklist is a Tale of Two Hearts–one filled, one broken–both danceable. This active list* will be available until the end of February only. Enjoy it while you will can (much like fleeting love . . . ):

Friday Fashion Fail: Stirrups and a Smalltown’s Best

8 Jan

For today’s Friday Fashion Fail, I am going to have to agree with LottieP over at Fragments, stirrup pants are indeed a “charmless garment.” It’s a fashion no-no from the 80s and early 90s that sprang up yet again in 2009, much to my horror. I hated them as a child, and hate them even more as an adult, on whom they do not belong. They look like some sort of accident, as in horseriding gear meets man. As Biggie would say, it’s “dead wrong.”

Fortunately, they seem to have lost their baggie quality and, with the help of modern lycra weaving techniques and good old spandex reliability, the stirrup part of the stirrup pant is more of an added extra, not really a total leg-shape and body form destroyer. Though, seeing them like this makes me wonder where is the functionality in that little loop after all?

The good news is that not all of 2009 is lost in this resurgence of a fashion uh oh. There’s always music to save the day. So if you’re a fan of stirrups or not, check out the Smalltown DJ’s Best of 09 mix. You will be dancing in the aisles and singing along hard enough to frighten some of the American Apparel salespeople.

Retail DJ January Tracklist

2 Jan

Well, it’s finally 2010. I’ve heard that even numbered years are the lucky ones, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. 2009 was…interesting. I got back from Brazil and started life in NYC all over again – new job, new place, new outlook on life. Here, at the beginning of a new year, I’m facing various other turning points, and hopefully optimism and a lot of hard work will continue to pay off. I haven’t made any official resolutions, as I often make goals for myself throughout the year, but I think I may do a “Dreams” poster, which is something I learned about from some of my Brazilian students. Instead of necessarily creating a long laundry list of personal aspirations/goals, many people cut out pictures that encompass the things – be they material or otherwise – they want to receive, earn, achieve, etc.

Considering that doing this very thing kept my spirits up as I searched for a job in the recession wrecked USA, I have complete faith in its power, if anything, to inspire and motivate the person who created the poster. For me, creating this site was also one of my dreams, and something I started working on when I was away. I hope to do the best I can to continue growing from here and making the site more and more awesome each day.

One huge aspect of this site is clearly music, and the focus on music as a soundtrack for our lives. It helps us as we grocery shop, cook, do laundry, work, and get ready to start and end our days. For me and many people I know, music is also a big part of setting our moods and behavior. If I listen to amazing music as I get ready for work or for going out, it makes everything better. I hope that those of you who read this site can gain something from it as well.

I wanted to open the new year with what will become a monthly feature for this site, a tracklist (you can download!) that will (hopefully) eventually became a full set/mix. If you have any questions about the mix, please feel free to leave a comment or email me. ALSO, spread the word about Retail DJ! Tell all your friends, link it on your blog or facebook, etc. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks, and enjoy the music!
