Wow…it’s been a while, huh? Grad school has kept me firmly buried 6 feet under piles and piles of reading, papers, and whole host and other work, so Retail DJ got the shaft. Fortunately, Xmas break always works as a great catchup time, so I’ll be posting a little more regularly for the next few weeks. We’ll see what happens once school starts back hehe.
To celebrate my brief (though hopefully extended) return, I thought I’d share some fun music to pump you up tonight.
I recently made a mix to help my fellow classmates get through finals/papers week called “Energy Mix.” It’s a rough, unedited bit that I put together in less than an hour (all improv stuff), but it’s fuuuun!

Also, the ever-magnificent Ohio-based DJ saint., whom some of you may remember from our exclusive interview with her back in May, has put out a new mix called “Midnight Mix,” a name that is undeniably fitting for tonight’s festivities.
(click to stream; no download)
Enjoy these mixes and be on the lookout for my December/January podcast, which will be coming your way very soon. Party safe tonight, everyone, and have a fun, happy, and healthy New Year!
A few nights ago, I had been up reading for hours and once it was time to actually sleep, my body wouldn’t allow it. I knew I was “in the doghouse” for not having completed a September podcast and was afraid that I was suffering the same “DJ’s Block” for October’s. Luckily, my sleep deprivation comes to my aid at times. After playing around with some old and new music, I put together a podcast that I feel properly reflects the state I’m in right now.
It’s a busy podcast, jumping from genre to genre and growing more and more aggressive as it goes on. It has its dark moments that are evenly eclipsed by lighter ones. It can serve as a party-starter or a soundtrack to some serious lounging; it’s all up to you.
I’ll be back with a new podcast in November and a few updates here and there (including a renovated podcasts page), so don’t forget to come back for more!

The new Retail DJ podcast is out and ready for your listening pleasure! I don’t have much to say about this one, actually, except that it’s good I added a lot of music that I don’t get to play that much at work (as I play more mellow music by day), so it starts a little hard. There are, of course, track of a light variety laced throughout the podcast, but this is just about dancing. I hope that it compels you to do a lot of it. Enjoy:

Alright folks. The May podcast is ready for your listening pleasure! There is no real theme this time around except that the podcast is sprinkled with older electronic music tracks I remember listening to in high school and my early years in college. I played around with this podcast quite a bit. It originally had a far more mellow vibe, but I upped the pace a bit and decided to put in more dance-friendly tracks, most of which have an upbeat lounge feel though some are borderline oldschool rave friendly. As per usual, I am all stopped up and sick right now, so my voice sounds craptastic (sorry!).
I find that this mix would inspire me the most while getting ready to go out, but much like any other form of art, music is best left for interpretation. Listen to it whenever you feel best and don’t forget to dance a little as you go along.

Over the past few months, as many of you may know, I’ve been doing quite a bit in terms of my personal life. Beyond the family and romance bit, there have been some changes in terms of work (I went in full-time on Retail DJ) and my academic career (I applied to grad school). The results were all positive, with the exception of the tough part that came at the end: deciding to whom I would say “yes.” After lots of careful thought, university visits, budgeting, planning, and nights spent with my eyes glued to mindmaps and pro/con lists on neon paper squares, I made the decision to stay in NYC for grad school.
However, during that process, particularly in the last month, I had been playing around on the mixer and using my mood to dictate what went into this podcast. I really wanted the songs to speak to each other – literally and figuratively – as they came together in the mix. Take, for example, the transition from a Sissy Knobby track to Mike Q’s “Ha Dub” rework. Considering Sissy Knobby’s transgressive performance of gender as a part of the now well-documented “sissy bounce” movement in New Orleans and DJ Mike Q’s presence within the NYC and NJ gay ballroom scene, there is no doubt that the two pieces fit, both thematically and musically. Then there’s “What I Need” by Curses! speaking directly to Hot Chip’s chanting on Jesse Rose’s “Forget My Name.” I let the songs talk to each other in a sense. It’s something that I truly enjoy when putting together these podcasts. Though a stressful and time-consuming process, I find that I learn a lot about the way music works and the power of even the simplest beats and lyrics.
Just a production note: this podcast was put together using my Vestax mixer with Serato and Itch, with final editing (i.e. voiceovers) done in Garage Band on my MacBook Pro.

For the first time in, well, ever (?), I am putting up the monthly podcast weeks before the last day. That’s cause for celebration. Another aspect of this podcast worthy of a hoorah is the fact that I recorded it all on my new mixer! You see, I previously had the difficult task of manually placing each song next to another, manually attempting to beatmatch when possible, crossfading almost all of the time, from one song to the next. But now, with the help of modern technology, this podcast is going to get increasingly better over time. Note that this recording was made after only one week of playing with the mixer (a Vestax vci-300 mk II + Serato/Itch), so there are a few mistakes. However, I am really proud of this and know that they will only get better with time and additional practice.
This mix includes new (and old) tracks by several of my favorite artists. I wanted to make something relaxing and danceable all at once, so I consulted some of the best, including: Joyce Muniz, Homework, Jesse Rose, and others who bring a guaranteed dance beat with every track they make. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did putting it together!

Sundcloud hates me . . . well, kind of. The original version of this podcast opens with the track “Bad Gal” by Robyn, Douster, and Savage Skulls. But due to copyright issues, I couldn’t post it (even though this podcast is not for sale, I make no profit from it, etc). SO, here is version 2, which is free (hopefully?) of copyright drama. I chose a different song in the opening. The 1st version is still available, but not on soundcloud. You do the math.
This podcast was created for January and completed the day of the WERK party, so it has a lot of danceable tracks and fun stuff. From now on, I live in fear of law suits based on tracklists now, so if you want to know what any of the songs are, just give me the minute:second reading and I will give you the track. In the meantime, you will just have to trust that I know what I am doing and will only pick the best music for you each month. After all, it’s my job.

In the first Septober Podcast: The Model, I encouraged you to “werk it” with the catwalk-worthy tracks I included as your diva/o soundtrack. But for this podcast, part two of the Septober series, I wanted to provide you with some music that while still active, was a bit more mellow in tone. The vibe is funky, soulful, and a whole lot of fun. As I mentioned in the post for part 1 of this podcast, the set includes some of my favorite tracks (among hundreds I went through during the months of September and October), including a track produced by Retail DJ featured artist EZRAKH. The vibe of this podcast is positive and at times even a little romantic (though not cheesy in the slightest). I hope you enjoy!

*note: some of the tracks have been shortened for a better flow in the podcast
This podcast has a special place in my heart, particularly because it took me so damn long to make! The process was complicated by the sheer volume of the tracks I had to listen to (I filtered through over 500 tracks I had downloaded), then by my being overwhelmed with a variety of other life distractions. It wasn’t actually procrastination, believe it or not, that delayed this mix. Unlike the process to make some of the other podcasts, this time around I was not fraught with the burden of having to literally dig music up from the grave due to a creativity shortage on the blogs. No. For once, I had an abundance of music to play with and most of it was really good, almost too good in fact, meaning I had to leave out a lot of great tracks to put up only my very favorites.
Because of the delay and the amount of music I had, I decided to combine the two months of September and October to create a two-part ”Septober” podcast, the theme being “The Model and the Mellow.” Today I present part 1 of the two-part podcast: The Model, a podcast that is meant to inspire you to get your catwalk on, be it during the subway transfer or the walk from the front door to the mailbox. This set is motivational, and pushes you to pick yourself up if you’re having a blah day and remember that you too can “werk it.” It’s perfectly-timed considering all the great fall fashion out there as well. You can look and feel good as you commute, buy groceries, or get ready for a night out. It’s all around fun, and filled with house tracks, many of them extended mixes so your walk won’t be cut musically short. I hope you enjoy this podcast as I much as I did putting it together. Enjoy:

While I was flying from NYC to Sao Paulo, I had 9 hours to kill. Though I had chosen the tracks I wanted to feature in the August podcast earlier in the month, I had yet to work on the full assembly because I had been swamped trying to work ahead at job number 1, teaching and preparing to go to Brazil for job number 2, and updating things here at Retail DJ for job number 3. After putting together the song components, I was pleased with the smooth, lounge-y feel of the set, and all that was left to work on was the voiceover. Yet thanks to the magic of a cold I couldn’t get rid of and congestion that just would not let up (though, given, the surprise 40 degree nights in Sao Paulo I braved with just a grandpa cardigan didn’t exactly help), my voice was a wreck. I sounded a bit like a man and, on top of that, a man who had plugged up his nose and ears with clay. Not sexy.
So I waited it out, hoping my voice would improve, as August steamed along, each day meaning the podcast was going to be coming later and later. After finally regaining a few more octaves of my voice and the ability to breathe through one of my nostrils, I tried my hand at the voiceover. Then, while in Rio, I had to deal with the s l o w e s t wireless internet ever. I could hardly check my email, God forbid upload a podcast. Sigh.
Finally, I was able to release the mix a few days ago once I returned to Sao Paulo, but didn’t have the time to type up a post. Nevertheless, today, on the last day of August, I come bearing gifts.
The Retail DJ August Podcast is a true reflection of where I am right now in my life. It’s the mellowest of sets yet, and even slightly melancholic, yet perfect for relaxing, save a few of the songs I added to keep your ears open. I have to say that despite its mood, it’s one of my most favorite podcasts to date, and one that was completed over one of the best experiences this year – returning to Brazil.
I hope that this mix means as much to you as it does to me, and if not that, that it at least gives you some much needed aural pleasure. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

Woohoo! On the last day of July, I finally put out the July podcast. As I explain in the introduction of the podcast, putting together this set was super difficult, mainly because a lot of the electronic music blogs have been putting up total crap. I mean that in the nicest way. It’s not so much that the individual tracks themselves are bad, it’s just that they all sound the same. I have noticed that the mixes I’ve come across as of late, while some suffer from the same problem, are fairly good because they include several other genres and mix up the sound. I think that’s really the key to good music – not being so stagnant and understanding that it’s in the mixing, the hybridity, that real music is born.
For this podcast, I really integrated a lot of the songs I have been getting ready to before I go out that amp me up and make me feel in a dance-y mood before I leave my apartment. I mixed in some music I’ve been introduced to by way of other mixes (such as the FCL tracks, which I first heard via mixes from La Fleur and Mowgli), some 80s music I heard and got all nostalgic about while watching Nip/Tuck, and some other items that are just generally personal favorites. The new tracks, such as Ali Love’s “Smoke and Mirrors” and Brodinski + Radioclit with “Plz Let Mi Fuk Ya (a weird, but fun track) are good stand-alones and were chosen because they have a unique sound that targets common bits of one’s musical palette without boring the person to tears.
While it was a trying task this time around, the podcast is solid, and I hope you all can enjoy the music as much as I do! (By the way, apologies for my voice – I’m a little sick!)

Taking a cue from the folks over at Too Many Sebastians, I thought I’d pay a little homage to the now-famous Brazilian DJ Duo The Twelves. Their remixes are sick, and I’ve included my favorites in this podcast. Based on the May tracklist, this podcast is short and sweet, at only about 36 minutes, but it’s enough to get a party going in your pocket (via your iPod of course!), to wake you up at work, or motivate you before getting your stomp on at the club.

On a humid, drizzly day in June, Jenna Weiss-Berman, AKA DJ Tanner let us invade her apartment in Brooklyn to take some pictures and play 20 questions. Creative and determined to provide fun dance parties for her NYC comrades, DJ Tanner is putting the emphasis on music back into the NYC fete. With her love for new wave, indie dance, and Italo-disco, she adds an interesting spin on the party scene, particularly the queer party scene, which she notes has been particularly lacking in the music and dance department. Though “grassroots” is the best adjective to describe her approach to party promotion, Rumours, the queer dance party she started with a friend, is quite popular among hip lesbians, transmen, and their gay, bi, and straight allied partygoers. While she cites the power of facebook for Rumours’ success, DJ Tanner doesn’t hide behind a computer screen. With her mellow demeanor and humor, her friends and colleagues can provide real-life backup to all the internet fame.
I’m also happy to announce that DJ Tanner played guinea pig as one of the first interviewees to go completely on the record by having our convo set in stone as a podcast! So take a moment, click play, and find out What’s Good? with party promoter and music selector DJ Tanner:
Though all the tracklists and podcasts here at Retail DJ are dance-inducing, this podcast based on the Retail DJ March Tracklist is pretty solid for hip rocking, booty shaking, and the like. With lots of house, ghetto tech, and dance rock, you’re sure to bust a move. Play / download and enjoy!

Amerrrika, F*ck Yeah! It’s that time of the year again, folks. Yes, the 4th of July has rolled around, which means there are going to be loads of people burning their extremities with fireworks and setting lawn furniture ablaze while attempting to grill. It’s not my *favorite* holiday, but I do rather enjoy any holiday that warrants days off work and parties.
In honor of nation’s birthday, I made a little podcast of some songs that would be played at an unconventional Independence Day BBQ, particularly one within the hipster crowd. While not known for being the most patriotic, they definitely know how to party. This set is heavy on the alt-rock, but I have a little grime, dance hall, garage, and electronic music to keep my regulars from rioting. Hit play and enjoy!
