I’m kind of a sucker for anything would a good bassline and a percussion sample, but this track, in its 7+ minutes of glory, really made me feel like jumping up and dancing.

Speaking of Dynamite . . .

The Boys of Kraak & Smaakkraak

Kraak & Smaak, those uber-talented Dutch DJs to whom I often show lots of love here, have come out with a remix of their track “Dynamite.” It’s quite a fitting name considering that this funky track sounds just as good in both its original and remixed form. The track is versatile, fun, and definitely worth a play. So don’t be shy, have a listen! Bomb’s the word.

Katy B (feat. Ms. Dynamite) – Lights On (video)

2 Nov

Katy B

UK songstress Katy B’s newest single (and video) pretty much puts into words what I feel whenever I go out. I, too, keep dancing once the lights come on and rarely want the night to end. If there’s a good DJ at the helm, it’s always a pity for 4 am to roll around and we’re all sent packing. Her track is one I can’t get enough of, and it gets me motivated for a long day at work or a night out. Enjoy:

Retail DJ Septober Podcast, Part 2: The Mellow

1 Nov

In the first Septober Podcast: The Model, I encouraged you to “werk it” with the catwalk-worthy tracks I included as your diva/o soundtrack. But for this podcast, part two of the Septober series, I wanted to provide you with some music that while still active, was a bit more mellow in tone. The vibe is funky, soulful, and a whole lot of fun. As I mentioned in the post for part 1 of this podcast, the set includes some of my favorite tracks (among hundreds I went through during the months of September and October), including a track produced by Retail DJ featured artist EZRAKH. The vibe of this podcast is positive and at times even a little romantic (though not cheesy in the slightest). I hope you enjoy!

What Is the Future of Music and Fashion?

1 Nov

What's It Gonna Be Then, Eh?

After last week’s slight scare from Gizmodo that Technics 1200 turntables were going to be discontinued and New York Magazine’s announcement that the hipster was indeed dead, it made me wonder about the future of music and fashion. Of course, the turntable announcement (which was later updated to show that it was only ONE model that would be discontinued, not the whole product line) frightened me more than that of the death of hipsterdom, but both made me think seriously about whether or not everything music and fashion would be reduced to something less tangible, less real. The real kicker came when I stumbled upon an article about the death of the web. The post focused on the increased growth in the app market and how its presence and obvious dwarfing of sites and internet-based programs that require some semblance of engagement (i.e. iTunes) may be a sign that the web is in its final days. There are always generational shifts and technology fears, but with our world changing so quickly, much more rapidly than ever before, could these pieces actually mean something?

Retail DJ Septober Podcast, Part 1: The Model

13 Oct

2 parts, 1 podcast

This podcast has a special place in my heart, particularly because it took me so damn long to make! The process was complicated by the sheer volume of the tracks I had to listen to (I filtered through over 500 tracks I had downloaded), then by my being overwhelmed with a variety of other life distractions. It wasn’t actually procrastination, believe it or not, that delayed this mix. Unlike the process to make some of the other podcasts, this time around I was not fraught with the burden of having to literally dig music up from the grave due to a creativity shortage on the blogs. No. For once, I had an abundance of music to play with and most of it was really good, almost too good in fact, meaning I had to leave out a lot of great tracks to put up only my very favorites.

Because of the delay and the amount of music I had, I decided to combine the two months of September and October to create a two-part ”Septober” podcast, the theme being “The Model and the Mellow.” Today I present part 1 of the two-part podcast: The Model, a podcast that is meant to inspire you to get your catwalk on, be it during the subway transfer or the walk from the front door to the mailbox. This set is motivational, and pushes you to pick yourself up if you’re having a blah day and remember that you too can “werk it.” It’s perfectly-timed considering all the great fall fashion out there as well. You can look and feel good as you commute, buy groceries, or get ready for a night out. It’s all around fun, and filled with house tracks, many of them extended mixes so your walk won’t be cut musically short. I hope you enjoy this podcast as I much as I did putting it together. Enjoy:

Nacho Lovers for Pangea

12 Oct

One of my favorite DJ duos Nacho Lovers just put up their newest mix. Right on the heels of their stop in NYC, they have put together this fantastic set as a soundtrack for a clothing line (right up our ally here at Retail DJ). Check out their description:

Handsome Clothing is a Toronto based clothing company who has just released their new Pangea line.

This is a conceptual mix we put together to soundtrack the story of the new line (you can read it looking through the new line’s lookbook or in their online shop).

The mix will also accompany any piece bought from the new collection (both in physical stores and online) on a CD.

It differs greatly from their previous work in that it incorporates far more than their usual disco and house  fare. This is a truly unique set that folds in rock, experimental, house, disco, funk, and afrobeat. It’s good to give a listen to as you’re getting ready, but also if you just want some fun background music as you do, well, anything!

Funk on a Friday: The Pop of the Underground

8 Oct

Death on the Balcony

I watch top 40 music videos online every now and then to have some connection with what’s going on above ground. What are the kids listening to at sea level these days, and why? What motivates their tastes, in both fashion and music, and what holds their attention for longer than 30 seconds? My connection to the world of pop is limited considering I don’t have a television, nor a radio, but my exposure to it is constant thanks to the internet. After listening or viewing, however, I am not all too convinced that I should stay connected beyond my small brush with it for the sake of avoiding becoming some sort of musical hermit.

What DOES interest me, however, is the pop of the underground. After months, even years, sometimes, a few songs continue to stick around and are frequently played by DJs in their mixes or live sets in order to reach the crowd that still needs to hear something a tiny bit familiar in order to go in deep. What is it about these songs that keep them around for so long? It’s clearly not laziness on the part of the DJ as he or she will add in songs that are less well-known in addition to the “pop of the underground” stuff. It could be simply to keep us on our toes, following the line of thinking that maybe one familiar song (at least to people who actively listen to the music of the underground) will pull us deeper into this woven web of tracks we’ve never heard.

That’s exactly what the guys from Death on the Balcony from Leeds did for the latest Adventures with Soul Clap podcast. While released on 9/22, I just got around to listening to it (oddly, it’s impossible to listen to over 24 hours of music in one day…odd, right?) and fell in love right away. It’s just the right amount of soul, disco, house, new wave, and funk to soothe the ears and get you ready for a night out or help you get through your day in (work, of course). For those of you who follow this blog (or others where this type of music is a regular feature), some of the tracks may be familiar, and others may be brand new. Enjoy them all, and Happy Friday!

A little from Soul Clap on DOTB:

In many ways D.O.T.B. are also our brothers from other mothers as they hold down pop nights in Leeds and basically play as wide range of music as they need to survive as DJs in a small town (just like we did for so long). Now, it seems like they’re making like The Clap and outgrowing their small town roots by making some serious waves with their original productions for their Magicbag label, some awesome remixes and even a forthcoming release on Airdrop.

What’s Good? Elin Nyström, Founder of Stylein

29 Sep
Elin Nystrom, Founder of Stylein

Elin Nyström, Founder of Stylein

“The simple things are the hardest to do,” remarked Stylein founder Elin Nyström, while sitting gracefully on the concrete platform outside of the Rendez-Vous New York contemporary fashion fair in one of her own designs. It was Wednesday, September 22nd, the last day of the fair, which united dozens of designers, press, and hundreds of buyers from around the world. While the rest of the designers were breaking down their racks and packing up for the night, Elin decided to take a cigarette break with Retail DJ.

With her small cup of celebratory champagne in hand from having made several essential sales, Elin shared her inspiration for the Stylein Spring/Summer 2011 collection, her take on modern yet simple style, and the history behind her line. Clean lines and smooth fabrics are key for Stylein, but Elin warns that “simple” shouldn’t be interpreted incorrectly. Simplicity, she notes, is something people need to respect more in fashion, particular in that it provides the wearer with “variety and space to add the styling herself,” something that’s missing in so many lines as of late with such inflexible, era-specific trends.

The growth of the line in less than a decade is a testament to the strength of Elin’s vision and Stylein’s versatility over time. Though Elin sells at several boutiques in the US (in NYC, for example, her pieces can be found at Eva NYC, Sweet Orchid, and soon, Oak, among others), Stylein is already a household name in Sweden, particularly Gothenburg, her birthplace and home to the official Stylein concept store. Beyond Sweden and the US, Stylein can be found throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, with continued expansion in the works. Yet despite all this success, Elin remains grounded and a true example for people trying to make a living out of their creative passions. Much like the mantra she reminds her interns to follow, Elin sees the opportunity before she sees the obstacles, and fashion world is much luckier for it.

So press play and take a moment and find out What’s Good? with Elin Nyström, Founder of Stylein:

*music: La Fleur – Plant House Mix

“A big part of styling is what music you present it with. . . Music, art, and fashion are all similar ways of expressing energy. Music is one of the most important elements in life. To present a new collection, we always do it through the catwalk, and a very important angle is how you present it through the music.”

“We tend to have this one side that is very feminine and very sensual . . . and then there is a side that’s…a lot more urban…almost punk rock-ish. They create a beautiful contrast. There could be a harmonized meeting between those two sides.”

“In the beginning, it was very playful; very creative in the way that I was not really thinking about a market at all. . .more inspiration clothes. But nowadays, it’s a line that’s working in the stores.”

“I work a lot with energy and life in general. The energy of Spring/Summer is smooth harmony, and luxury.”

“I never want to present anything that I don’t believe in 100% . . . I only do designs that I would wear myself.”

“I think there is a need to have things that are consistent, not the mass-production, easy buy, fast buy, something you buy and throw it out a couple of weeks later. Some of the us in the business are really seeing the potential of doing clothes that are going to be fashionable and beautiful in 7 years  . . designs that are kind of classic.”

“Before, I wasn’t really comfortable being the image [of Stylein]. I wanted to be in the background. But I realized that in order to do this, there definitely has to be storytelling, and I’m comfortable with that now.”

EZRAKH – “77 Theme”

24 Sep

EZRAKH sent me this video at the crack of dawn when we were talking shop. It’s of a completely original track he produced called “77 Theme.” It’s a bit like what would happen if the music of Tacteel, Thomas Bangalter, Roska, and Moodymann had a baby and left it on the doorstep of a talented producer and DJ from Rahway, New Jersey. Fortunately, their offspring would be in good hands considered it would be well cared for by a young man whose creative genius is endless. Check it out:

Funk on a Friday: Extra Credit

24 Sep

I often find myself thinking that music is coming to a standstill. After listening to hundreds of tracks and mixes on a weekly basis, things begin to sound the same, creating a sonic plateau of bleeps, buzzes, and bass-heavy repetition. It seems like electronic music hits a wall here and there, each DJ or producer simply parroting one another, either due to lack of originality or an inaccurate interpretation of mimicry as inspiration. But from the depths monotony, a few DJs truly provide a beacon of hope.

One such example is DJ duo Homework, whose work I’ve lauded here on the site before, but whose consistently excellent mixes will continue to earn them continued praise. In their latest mix for the Made to Play Podcast, there is not a single dull moment. This time around, the boys of Homework devote their energy to old school soul, funk, house, and an overall slick set of beats that work for just about any act taking place on a weekend night, particularly Friday.

In some ways, Friday has become a bit like a Monday for me in terms of energy levels with all the week-day dancing. This mix is certainly a pick-me-up, providing the perfect amount of motivation to push me through all the steps needed to make Friday night solid. I hope that you all enjoy it as much as I do (I use present tense as I am literally enjoying it for the 6th time today, if that’s any testament to its excellence). Cheers for an A+ well earned.

Get Ready With L_cio – the Mix

14 Sep

L_cio (photo credit: Mauricio Landini)

When I asked L_cio to put together a mix for getting ready to, I knew that he would come up with something interesting. His sound is different, unique, and not necessarily something you’d listen to when you’re getting ready to go out. Nevertheless, after testing my theory out on one of his more recent Live PAs, I knew that it doesn’t only take disco or house to compel me to put my best foot forward.

It works for getting dressed to, yes, particularly if you are about to go do something a little more heavy during your outing, but what’s great about this mix is that it’s amazing to put on just for listening as well. In fact, that’s what I recommend that you do first. Listen to the mix when you’re still, calm, and ready to pay attention, as L_cio himself suggested during his interview. He’s was right (he knows his music best, afterall). Then, after having listened once before, listen to it on your commute to the party as a form of complete mood enhancement.

This Live PA contains music produced by L_cio, and it has a sophisticated, unrivaled sound. It’s a deep set, bringing in chants, heavier moments of bass, and surprising percussion samples, but it also has its moments of serenity and calm, carrying the listener from one emotional state to the next.

Get Dressed to This: All A-Flutter

10 Sep

This morning, when I woke up from my hour of sleep (yes, one hour), I was delighted to know that even while under a down comforter, I remained slightly cold, the temperature outside barely reaching the mid-60s. As the weather cools and the leaves turn, thus so does my soul. It’s no surprise to the people who read Retail DJ that I am a big fan of this season, the justification possibily being my actual date of birth, but for those of you didn’t know this, you’ve come at a great time. As I mentioned last night, as an homage to the coming of fall, I’m posting a new Get Dressed to This outfit + mix piece every night for a week.

For this edition Get Dressed to This, I’ve decided to show my true crush on fall with some highly feminine pieces, though of course “edged” up by way of accessories and creative tailoring. Though this outfit is clearly for dancing, it’s also nice for a dinner date, small get together, or a people-watching centric walk with friends (for which fall is perfect!). This outfit is set to the music from the most recent Fool’s Gold podcast (“Foolcast”) by way of Style of Eye. It perfectly matches the outfit, volleying between soft and hard, disco and dubstep, catchy lyrics and heavy bass. L_cio hard at work (photo credit: Mauricio Landini)

When I was in Brazil recently, I had the opportunity to hear L_cio drop one of his amazing Live PAs at Vegas Club in Sao Paulo, and I invited him to be a featured artist here at Retail DJ. Though the exclusive Retail DJ interview will not be up until Monday (mix on Tuesday), you have all weekend to get very familiar with his sound.

On August 28th, he played at the Mothership party at D-Edge, which was recently voted #1 club in a Best of Sao Paulo poll. Here is his live PA for your listening pleasure. Come back in Monday to discover more about the man behind the music. Enjoy!

Bringing It All Together: DJ Beware for Man Recordings

8 Sep

DJ Beware indeed. This man means business.

DJ Beware recently put out a mix for the 5-year anniverary for Man Recordings, a Berlin-based label that supports Brazilian (and other) funk artists. They’ve been putting out stellar EPs, records, mixes, and singles for the past few years, and in such a short time have truly been a leader in putting funk carioca on the map. It’s a positive form of globalization, with artists from Brazil earing exposure and benefiting in the lucrative sense as well. This mix is a medley of a ton of the tracks they’ve released over the years, and a nice tribute for a company that’s bringing it all together, one track at a time.

Beyond being a nice way of honoring Man Recordings, it also happens to be a solid mix. Though I’ve heard all the songs therein, the order, the remixing, and the general delivery make everything sound brand new to my ears. It’s a joy to listen to, with tracks from MC Gringo, MC Gi, Edu K, Joyce Muniz, the Count and Sinden, Gaiola das Popozudas, Deize Tigrona, and many many more. I advise you play at home so you can truly break it down. Trust me – you’ll want to :)

Smooth as Butter

7 Sep

bad for the heart, good for the soul?

I’m still catching up with emails, posts, and life after a week of having been back in NYC. Part of that involves a continuation of the club chronicles and the amazing music I heard while I was away. My last weekend in Sao Paulo (which I am recounting before I get around to finishing the tales from my first weekend) had a few twists and turns that led me to a happy ending.

That said, let’s start with the beginning of the end . . .

My last Friday in SP I actually spent in bed. After having been sick for the previous 3 weeks (NYC, prior to going to Brazil, then all through the Brazil trip), I needed to fully recover, and prayed that sleep would be the solution. While I remained a little sick on Saturday, I knew that hell or high water, dead or alive, I couldn’t spend my last night in SP doped up on Benegripe and filled to the brim with green tea. I was going out no matter what.

I ended up at (you guessed it) Vegas, where all I knew about the DJs was that one of them playing for the night was from NYC. Wearing an outfit that channeled mime meets Raggedy Ann, I was ready to get my final dance on in the B . . . and BOY, did I. Thanks to the amazing sounds from the tagteam set from NYC-based DJ Brian Thomas and Cali-based DJ Daniel Casanova, I had a stellar final night in the B and felt very very proud to be an American :- )

They easily switched from their Macbooks to vinyl, commanding the crowds attention and easily keeping it with a super-long set full of nuevo disco, house, funk, and even a few moments of more minimal tracks. I often find myself lamenting the lack musical depth of a lot of American DJs (the exception, of course, being those I profile and/or rave over here), but I was in for a pleasant surprise that night. Before actually meeting the DJs, I had no idea THEY were the Americans who were headlining. I introduced myself in Portuguese, received a reply in Portuguese from Brian, and for a moment assumed that the American DJ(s) had already gone on. But a few minutes in, I asked if he was the one from NYC, and sure enough, a few English words later, I knew right away that my assumption had been squashed.

Though you can’t listen to Brian’s set from that night, you can quite easily get a taste of his talent by way of the mix from his site notmargarine.com (that he did for Brazilian DJ site deepbeep). Brian, better known in the States as Butter, put together a sick mix back in the spring that you cannot miss. From the second you hit play, this lounge-y, house-infused set is sure to put you at ease, but never fails to excite in those moments when you need it the most. It’s perfect for almost any occasion – be it going out for a drink, getting dressed for a night of dancing, or even your daily commute. It’s a musical jack-of-all-trades with a sound as smooth as butter. Enjoy:

Work In Progress

2 Sep

I just awoke from a frightening, anxiety-inducing dream all about making a bed. In the dream, about 40 people had come to my house unannounced and trashed my imaginary (and unseen) roommate’s room (which was at this point a freakishly elaborate, Rococco-style interior feat), and the dream ended with my screaming and crying because they were unable to make the bed properly and I had no idea when he was come.

Welcome to Thursday.

The dream, while more riddled with panic than I had ever expected considering it’s been such a very long time since I’ve had a full-fledged nightmare, made me realize something. I have a lot of goals, deadlines, and tasks I have to get accomplished in a very short time, and my subconscious mind is starting to feel the pressure and talk back. I can’t cry about unmade beds, but I have to use this dream as motivation to keep pushing myself to prepared for those unannounced sources of drama while still being prepared for the unknown deadline looming in the close future. I’m a work in progress, as is this site, and for the better.

Speaking of deadlines, goals, and tasks, DJ/producer/future model? (I got so many requests for Ka§par’s number/email (which I did not disclose of course) after his interview and photoshoot went up that it was a bit ridiculous; I had to remind readers it was about the music and not just a pretty face!) Ka§par got in contact with me recently about his latest podcast, the first of its kind, for the Groovement-based series, and I immediately got to playing and downloading because I know that everything he does is golden.

Ka§par – The Reach Out, Vol 1″ (Groovement Recordings)

Groovement recordings present “The Reach Out, vol1″ by Ka§par by Ka§par

(click to play ; click the small arrow on the right to download)

The Reach Out Vol. 1 mix is a compilation of lots of his previous work, current releases, and the sounds of some of his favorites. He notes:

[the mix was] recorded using two 1200′s, a bedroom Numark mixer, some vinyl and Traktor Scratch Pro…
Three things about this mix:
1. Features a selection of tracks from friends, coleagues, label mates, just mates and, of course, yours truly.
2. It’s a showcasing mixtape, so all tracks are mixed in hiphop style, quickly and painlessly.
3. Post recording production includes overall multiband compression for volume stability, extra dirt and punch Eq’ing on the master, and some added fx to further increase the flow of the mix.
All underground, all fresh, all authentic – the music, the mixing, the featured artists.

Basically, what’s not to like? It’s a solid example of how talented Ka§par is, something I can’t stress enough, but also of his ability to literally do some “Reaching Out” of his own but pulling in tracks from his fellow DJs/producers to really showcase their work. On top of it, he’s given us a sneak peak into putting this podcast into motion, which is always helpful for all your music fiends out there who have tried your hand at mixing and production.

I highly recommend pressing play on this one, folks. As you know, I listen to the music I feature on this site to the point of nausea, and if I still like it after that, then it goes up. This one by far passed the test, so don’t miss it. It’s house-y, light when it needs to be and deeper right when you want it that way, and overall a great podcast for those times when you have a little work to do on your own and you need something to help you find your focus (and maybe dance a little too). ;  -)
