Retail DJ May 2011 Podcast

9 May

Alright folks. The May podcast is ready for your listening pleasure! There is no real theme this time around except that the podcast is sprinkled with older electronic music tracks I remember listening to in high school and my early years in college. I played around with this podcast quite a bit. It originally had a far more mellow vibe, but I upped the pace a bit and decided to put in more dance-friendly tracks, most of which have an upbeat lounge feel though some are borderline oldschool rave friendly. As per usual, I am all stopped up and sick right now, so my voice sounds craptastic (sorry!).

I find that this mix would inspire me the most while getting ready to go out, but much like any other form of art, music is best left for interpretation. Listen to it whenever you feel best and don’t forget to dance a little as you go along.

Now Playing: “La Musica” Remixed

1 Jun

Here's lookin' at you, Munk.

Munk’s new single “La Musica” has been all over the blogs this weekend! It’s a funky track by one of my personal favorite artists, so I was delighted when I saw it. After promptly heading over to iTunes to purchase it, I found all these amazing remixes of the single. Here’s one by Toronto DJs Azari & III (another personal fave):

Note: This is solely for promotional purposes and not for download. To pick up the whole single (included more remixes like this one), buy it on iTunes.

Also, here’s the video for the single. Munk’s been known to do video sampling from old European movies, and this one is no different. Enjoy:

Retail DJ March Tracklist: The Ides Have It

22 Mar

We all know that the 15th of March didn’t bode too well for ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar, but I figured I’d give 3/15 a new spin and maybe a little more luck.

For this month’s Retail DJ Tracklist, I’ve decided to give you 15 tracks, each with a different sound, but that somehow come together nicely. Tracks range from a little old school hip hop and experimental house to ghetto-tech and Italo-German dance rock. The tracks will be available for download until April 22nd, so get to downloading now! Enjoy this set, and continue to have a happy March!

Now Playing: Volume 1

23 Feb

As I mentioned previously, I planned on featuring a few new regular posts on the page. This is one of them. Welcome to Now Playing. In Now Playing, I (or friends and special guest artists) will leave a few tracks, what they are listening to at the moment that are worth checking out.

This is what I have on heavy rotation this week, thanks to the folks at Discobelle and Too Many Sebastians:

1. Cecile & Venice – Rimmel (click here to dl)

This was featured in the January Aeroplane monthly mix. I fell in love. Now I can’t.stop.listening.to.it. It’s groovy, disco-y, and will make you dance even when you don’t feel like it. Turns out they are managed by Gomma, which now makes sense . . . because Gomma is a label that seems as if it is allergic to putting out anything but awesome music.

video: This video features clips from an old Czech New Wave film . . . random, though typical Gomma (see: video for “Rat Race” by Munk)

2. Matt Van Schie – Saturday Night (G.L.O.V.E.S. Remix) (click here to dl)

At parts, this song reminds me of music from Daft Punk’s Discovery. If you know that album well, you’ll know what I am talking about when you hear the track.

3. Polargeist – Home from the Can (Tensnake Remix) (click here to dl)

Oldschool house feel mixed with a little chill. Best for motivating you as you go out or while having drinks. It’s danceable, but only in that “I’m a model, I do not sweat” kind of way. :-)

4. Savage Snobs – GLOBAL  (click below to listen/dl)
GLOBAL by Savage Snobs

Luuurv this song. It’s cute, ’nuff said. It’s a hip hop song in the vein of the Cool Kids (of “Black Mags” and 90s revival style fame) and N.E.R.D.

5. Ali Love – Love Harder (Mighty Mouse Remix) (click here to dl)

Ali Love, who dropped Diminishing Returns, has yet another awesome song out: Love Harder. This track was also featured in Aeroplane’s January mix, and thank goodness for it. This track is mellow, yet danceable, sexy yet fun, and makes you feel like  you could stop traffic.

6. Chaos dans le CBD – Cheese’s Christ (original mix) (click here to dl)

Heavy groove track. It starts off slow, but then speeds up and gets a little more depth. Reminds me of something I’d probably have heard in that old store Lounge on Broadway (which was one of the coolest stores ever, actually) that is now a Mango or a Victoria’s Secret or some major.corporate.label.store at which I never shop, so I can’t remember its name. There is a part in this song in which there is so much of a “shhh” sound, I initially thought my furnace was coming on or someone was entering my room with a smoke machine. Yet I like it.

7. Delphic – Halcyon (L-Vis 1990 Remix) (click here to dl)

I like this song primarily because it starts off sounding like some typical British pop joint, but then L-Vis 1990 just…wrecks it. It turns into something else entirely, and I mean that in a good way! He makes it sound much darker and aggressive, which I know I sometimes need when I am walking around in the city or on the train and need a little boost of toughness. But then he brings back the sad, sentimental voice of the artist right when you least expect it. And, somehow, it just works.

8. Metronomy – Trick or Treatz (click here to dl)

This song has been stuck in my head for the longest. It’s an old-ish Metronomy song that came out before they straight blew up in the States, but it had been heavily sampled enough for people to be familiar with it if they were into electronica.

Retail DJ February Tracklist: A Tale of Two Hearts

3 Feb

February is a month of many events: President’s Day, Black History Month, Leap Year, Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, sometimes Carnaval/Mardi Gras, and many more. But what I think of most when I think of February is Valentine’s Day. It’s a time of love, fake sentiments as expressed in hues of pink and red, sincerity, disappointment, expectations, and emotional bankruptcy. It’s a busy month for the brain, but especially for the heart. In respecting our country’s tradition of reminding us to honor the ones we love and to be jealous when the vase of flowers doesn’t end up on our desks, I thought I’d follow suit with a more realistic take on Valentine’s Day. This month’s Retail DJ Tracklist is a Tale of Two Hearts–one filled, one broken–both danceable. This active list* will be available until the end of February only. Enjoy it while you will can (much like fleeting love . . . ):

Get Dressed to This: Finding Your Way Home

7 Jan

Today, I am returning to New York, my new home, from Memphis, my home town. I’ve lived in NYC since 2002, thus it’s been the place where I have spent the entirety of my adulthood (save the year I spent in Brazil). In many ways, NYC is more my home than the place I was born. I say that with no tinge of negativity. It’s just my reality. Even before I moved away from home, there was a part of me in terms of both my style and diverse music taste that screamed “New York!” and in recognizing that, I followed my heart. And as so many things about my new home change on a regular basis, there are always certain things that will always be the same.

With that said, this “Get Dressed to This” Thursday feature is about finding your way home, the centerpiece being a compass pendant, accompanied by an amazing mix by Munk (the Gomma label backed musical genius behind the super sexy tracks “Live Fast, Die Old” featuring Asia Argento and “Down In L.A.“). Enjoy:
