The Power of Love

31 Jul

Famed Brazilian jelly-shoe line Melissa has a new collection out for (Brazilian) spring/summer 2012! It’s a light, super-feminine line with lots of pastels, dainty details, and even Disney villainesses. It’s quite a contrast to the fall/winter 2011 collection Time Code, which showed its allegiance to the slick, structured stylings of 80s business attire. The Power of Love collection, much like many fashion items for the American fall/winter season, pays homage to the 60s and 70s with shoes fitting for anyone from flower children to disco divas.

Here’s the video “footbook,” along with a few personal favorites + clothes that fit the bill. For those of you in search of looks for next summer (when they will hit American shores) or vacationing in Brazil in the spring/summer, these looks will certainly offer a little inspiration:

Get Dressed To This: Bruised

More Courtney Love than Retail DJ?

Do you ever come home covered in bruises and have no idea why? I do…

Wait, that sounds kinda bad. I am not in a fight club, nor do I get drunk to the point of passing out or falling down. But sometimes, I come home with all these mysterious purple marks whose respective origins remain unknown. And then it hits me!

It’s the music. Or better, the dancing.

Not that I am an arms-out flailing type of anything, but sometimes, the music is just so good that you dance until it hurts, until you literally hit things and forget that it even happened because the good sounds are so distracting. It’s been quite some time that the music I have heard while out has sent me into such a frenzy, but there are still mixes that come across my “desk” that make it happen. This week, such a mix comes to us by way of Idiotproof, whose latest mix for the Jackmode podcast is so energetic that I can’t help but give it the recognition it deserves. Every.single.track on the mix is hard-hitting and might serve up a post-dance punishment for those of you who get as into the music as I.

But in between all the dancing, hopefully you’ll have some time to get dressed. To go along with the intense music, I’ve decided to put together an outfit that has a hard exterior, but a few whimsical notes to welcome you. A mix of vintage, new, and handcrafted items, this outfit is full of conversation pieces. That is, if you have any time for that between all the moves you’ll be doing.

But enough of me. Time for the music. Press play and take a bit to Get Dressed To This . . .

Her Name Was Rio . . .

31 Aug

There's more to Rio than this

Oh Rio. Most people who visit Brazil flock to this city for its beaches, its iconic architecture (Big Jesus, anyone?), and its mix of nature and modern technology (they’ve got a forest and a subway a few kilometers away from each other).

To me, it’s a bit like one big Brazilian Disneyworld (or Universal Studios around the more rough, favela-accented parts), but it definitely has its less kitschy, more hidden treasures as well. One of them happens to be what Wallpaper Magazine considers one of the MUST SEE spots in Brazil: Muggia.

I wrote about Muggia about little over a year ago after having bought one of their bags in Sao Paulo (they sell their wares in boutiques and stores throughout Brazil and Europe) at the Galeria Melissa (the Clockwork Orange meets Star Trek-esque hub for all things related to Melissa shoes) on Oscar Freire in Sao Paulo. It was love at first sight, and I knew I’d have to hunt them down if I ever happened to be in Rio.

Luckily, I had the opportunity to pay the atelier a visit last week . . .

Melissa Amazonista!

25 Aug

Ultragirl (w/ Amazon print)

Melissa, my favorite brand of plastic fantastic, has a new line of shoes out for the spring/summer season in Brazil. While it’s not my favorite collection to date (Afromania wins hands down, thus far), there are a few standouts. I got my hands (eyes?) on the new video lookbook a few days ago and after having paid Sao Paulo Melissa store a visit last week, I felt Retail DJ was long overdue for a post on the magic that is Melissa. I also noted recently on the Retail DJ facebook page that Melissa has come out with a line for men that is anticipated to launch in the fall, so be on the lookout for my review of the new M-Zero line as well. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the view!

Get Ready With Amylulita – The Photoshoot

21 Jul

When Amylu met us at Fontana’s in the Lower East Side for the photoshoot, we knew we were in for a treat. She had a lot of stuff and a friend (Blanca Vi, founder and designer for Frolain Hats) in tow to help style. Amylu was planning to put together a look before our eyes, completely from scratch, and had brought all the “equipment” needed for the job: bags of jewelry, a suitcase of clothes, a clothing rack, hangers, a suitecase of shoes, a case of makeup, and another bag of hats. I literally felt like I was inside Amylu’s closet, and for the better.

The photoshoot was energetic and fun, and I don’t think the iced coffees we all downed beforehand had anything to do with it. The source was clearly Amylu, for whom getting ready is a bit like the rhythmic dance portion of the Summer Olympics – there’s a lot going on, but in the end, everything falls beautifully into place.

For Amylulita’s shoot, we were welcomed to turn her wardrobe inside out, and now it’s your turn. Come along and see what happens when you Get Ready With Amylulita:

BEFORE

What do you typically listen to when you’re getting ready to go out?
For getting ready in the morning, I actually made a “Happy Morning Music” Mix. [laughs] So I’ve been listening to that every day. I gave a copy to my mom that she listens to on her way to work. It was actually made for an ex-boyfriend, but I realized that I really like it, so I don’t care that it was for an ex. I still use it.

The first song is Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” I also have “Downtown” in French, some Beatles and Beach Boys. . . They’re all about the morning and the sun coming out—very uplifting stuff. It makes you feel really good. I walk out of my house singing whatever song I left off on. It helps me get through my day.

For getting ready to go out, I listen to my own mixes when I’m done because I’m pretty proud of them. Depending on what kind of a night I’m thinking about having, I listen to the mix that matches. They make me feel happy and upbeat. They motivate me to get out of the house.

How would you describe your personal style in a sentence?
“Stylish, but comfortable.” I’m not a big fan of stiff or scratchy materials. I like soft and sheer materials, like lace, thin cotton—things that allow you to breathe and that have some give.

Is your wardrobe for going out different from what you wear when you DJ?
No, it’s pretty much the same thing, though if there is some sort of special theme related to my music set, I will wear an outfit that connects to it somehow. For example, I just DJed for a special event with this band called Something In Spanish, and their whole thing was this weird but cool, culty, séance theme. They had candles and creepy, ghostly kinds of things. The theme was very dark and strange, but at the same time, there was some pop involved. I ended up wearing a black 1950s-style, button-down dress with a collar. I did Siouxsie Sue-style eye makeup and black lipstick. Lately, I’ve been using glitter—not all over the place, but down the middle of my eye and coming down like a tear drop on both eyes.

Today, you’re wearing leopard print leggings. Are you really into leopard print?
Yes. I love leopard print! My bedroom has a leopard print rug, bedsheets, all of it. [laughs] I think it all goes back to my love of rockabilly and that kind of style.

And the black and white saddle oxfords you were in last night . . . are those a staple in your wardrobe too?
Yes. That was a new pair, but I have an older pair that I had been wearing a lot, but not as much recently. I had kind of put them away. I own a lot of shoes and many different styles. Sometimes, I will put some away and won’t wear them for a long time, then I kind of “re-find” them and start wearing them again. I found the oxfords in a second-hand store and they were brand-new, like nobody had ever worn them. They fit me perfectly, and I liked them better than the ones that I owned, so I bought them.

It sounds like a lot of your styles comes by way of vintage shops. Are there any particular stores or brands that you love and are really devoted to?
I don’t think I am devoted to any brands because clothes fit me funny sometimes. I have super long legs and a short torso, so pants don’t normally fit me correctly. I don’t like wearing pants in general. I prefer wearing dresses and skirts, tights, cut-off spandex leggings, etc.

I do really like Betsey Johnson dresses with all the florals and bright colors. I also like shopping at vintage stores like Beacon’s Closet because it’s huge and the people who work there have gone through the selections already and picked out things that could actually be bought. I do like going to places like Goodwill though, because sometimes I’ve been able to find really cool things that are one of a kind and at prices I feel comfortable with. [laughs]

Are there trends out there that you love or hate?
I really really dislike Uggs. They are just slippers. They’re fuzzy and a lot of people don’t wear them socks! [laughs] It doesn’t look comfortable to me. They get all dirty from the snow. . . I don’t know. I just don’t like them. I feel like people are wearing slippers outside.

I don’t mind the trend of those sandals with lots of straps and the Greek god/gladiator-style sandals. I’ve been wearing sandals like that for about the past 6 years, so I think it’s funny how all of a sudden this trend just took off and everybody has them.

In terms of things I really like, I LOVE plastic shoes!

You’ve come to the right place then, considering that I love Melissa shoes, cover them all the time on the site, and am wearing them right now, as we speak.

Yay!!! I like Melissa shoes. I actually found out about Melissa shoes when I was living in Madrid. I went to this shop and I saw little sandals that reminded me of some shoes I used to wear as a little girl. They were white with a pointed toe and a tiny kitten heel. They had a strap on the ankle and were textured and had lines . . .  a bit like a wicker chair or a white picket fence. I loved them, but they cut up my feet so badly I ended up having to sell them.

I have another pair of shoes that are not by Melissa, but they’re plastic. They are clear, plastic heels with an open toe, a strap on the ankle, and a clear, red bow on the top. I call them my “Dorothy” shoes because they look like Dorothy’s ruby slippers, even though they’re clear. Today, I saw a woman at the Taiwanese festival with these shoes that compelled me to follow her with my eyes. I was just like, “Oh my God!” She was wearing pearly pink sandal/clogs on with wings on the ankle! I really wanted to ask where she got them, but I held back.

Yes, those are Melissas too. It’s a design by Vivienne Westwood. When I saw them, I remember thinking, “Oh no. I can pull off a lot, but not those.” Maybe with the right outfit . . .
She definitely did. That shoe is so outrageous, that the less outrageous your outfit, the more they stand out—less is more. She was just wearing blue jean cutoff shorts and a pink, silk tank top that matched the shoes perfectly. That was it, and it looked great!  I was impressed.

I’ve noticed that at almost each and every Nacotheque party and the various press I see about you, your hair color and style are different. Considering all this change, what has been your favorite style and/or color to date?
I’d have to say it’s when I had blonde hair and when I had brown and peach hair. I bought Cotton Candy Pink Manic Panic dye and I mixed Vampire Blood Manic Panic and made this peach/pink, almost apricot or salmon even. It was really cool. I put it on the underside of my bangs and followed it through to my hair, which is cut in an angle, on the one side of it that’s longer. I tend to get bored with my hair color, so I change it a lot. It’s like a piece of art to color and to cut, but also to look right on my face.

AFTER

Do you cut and dye your own hair?
No, just dye. I’ve been to a couple different places in the city to get it cut. I was going to a place in Greenpoint, which is a greaser place that’s known for doing pompadours. I started getting my haircut by a guy who was trained by Vidal Sassoon. But now I’ve started going back to a place that I used to go to that has mostly Japanese hairstylists called HairMates. It’s on St. Marks and Third Avenue.

The guy who does my hair there (who is not Japanese) totally gets what I’m asking for. He doesn’t look at me with three eyes when I ask him to cut my bangs shorter because I don’t want pretty long hair like every other girl who just asks for a trim. I’m like, “Yes, please shave that off.” [laughs]

Dressed to Win

17 Jun

It’s pretty obvious which team I hope wins this year’s World Cup, but just in case you’re not a big follower of the blog, I’ll give you a hint: their flag’s colors are yellow, blue, and green and they just want a little “order and progress.”

Unfortunately, I find team jerseys to be a bit cheesy and not very flattering (at least, on women) and wanted to provide an alternative way to cheer on your team with meaning you have to wear numbered mesh. Here are some dresses that allow you to jump up and down sans flash and dance to your heart’s content:

Aerial View Dress, Modcloth, %57 USD

Sci-Fi Heroine Dress, Modcloth, $48 USD

Exaggerated One Shoulder Pencil Dress, Asos, $82 USD

Kimono Sleeve Dress in Yellow, SteveJ & YoniP, $288 USD

Stretch Jersey Dress, Rugby by Ralph Lauren, $108

and let’s not forget these adorable shoes by Melissa, aptly named “Cute”

Mix On Tap: Lovers

12 Jun

Today is O Dia dos Namorados in Brazil. Known as the “Brazilian Valentine’s Day,” it’s a special day for folks in love, heavy like, or who just feel like buying red and pink things filled with chocolate for well, anyone. It certainly has a far more romantic premise than the American version (on which you are more than welcome to give you teacher, mom, little sister, and best friend a Valentine’s Day goodie), though much like the American version, it’s a huge commercial success and yet another manufactured holiday to boost the economy and line the pockets of many a company.

Even Melissa came out with a promotion related to Dia dos Namorados involving an all-red version of “Royale,” one of the shoes from their newest line “Melissa et Circenses“:

Anyway, in order to honor this Brazilian tradition and give my American readers something to keep them cool this summer, I give you a great Frozen Strawberry Marguerita recipe as well as a mix that is romantic enough at time to enjoy with your boo, but that has the necessary dance-cred to entertain even the least romantic. . .

The Drink

Frozen Strawberry Marguerita (c/o Guy Fieri)

ingredients: 2 cups crushed ice, 1/2 cup strawberry puree (frozen can or fresh strawberries, pureed), 1 cup tequila, 2 limes, juiced, splash of Triple Sec, splash of simple syrup (equal amounts sugar and water heated until sugar dissolves, then cooled)

Combine in a blender, ice, strawberry water, tequila, lime juice, Triple Sec and simple syrup. Puree until smooth. Pour into rocks glasses and serve.

I <3 Mondays: Looking Up

24 May

Oldies But Goodies

On New York subways, people rarely look at each other. They look up, they look across, they look through. . . anywhere to avoid eye contact. One of benefits of wearing interesting shoes is that I can at least entertain my fellow public transportation patrons as they look in the most common direction: down.

My latest Melissas, pictured above, are from an older season and bear an even older image: that of original Disney character Oswald, a poor little ignored rabbit that has fallen off the Disney radar thanks to Mickey and Co. Yet somehow, in this new rendering of an old cartoon, Oswald reclaimed fame. Similarly, I’d like to bring back the art of eye contact. It’s odd that our eyes are oft closed in a city that supposedly never sleeps.

Speaking of sleep, I am exhausted, but wanted to leave you all with a lullaby for adults. Typically, the mix I do for I <3 Mondays is to start your day, but this one is for you to end it. With this melodic mix of progressive house and soul, the Rraul.com crew brings it home with this Colors Church podcast hosted by DJs Jota Wagner and Wander A (and, to its credit, a case of beer). It’s so beautiful that it actually made me cry on the bus yesterday, though I am not sure if I did so more from the music or from the saudades I felt when I heard Brazilian Portuguese again (the first few minutes consist of the hosts describing upcoming shows and parts of their set).

Nevertheless, give this mix a listen as you lay your head down on your pillow, or even as you commute in the morning. Hopefully, it will compel you to look up, see the world with open eyes, and take in all the beauty you can hold.

Saturday Site Love: United Nude

United Nude in Neon Pink

Yesterday, I went to a Melissa Shoes sample sale in Chelsea* where I felt like a kid in a candy store. All those bright colors, all that yummy-smelling plastic and rubber, and the designs…so many designs! I was also thrilled to see many a pair from seasons past, versions that had been discontinued, and shoes in colors that were no longer manufactured. Overjoyed is not the word. Special thanks to the Melissa distributors who were incredibly helpful, patient, and generous (I got two free pairs of shoes!).

While Melissa is my staple of shoes these days, I thought I’d pay a little homage today to United Nude, who also utilizes a form os plastic for some of their shoes, and always thrill the buying public with their architectural masterpieces made just for your feet. With shoes that resemble modern art more than something you’d walk in, United Nude is surely a brand that cannot be overlooked. Now that they have their own, brand-new flagship store in NYC (!!!), United Nude is even more accesible, but for those of you who live out of town or who just don’t have the time to stop by their 268 Elizabeth Street location, give their site a looksie. Their prices, particularly considering the work that goes into these shoes, are not so bad, and you can often find their wares on sale. So enjoy the view as you check out United Nude:

Femme en Fourrure: Plump Biscuit

10 May

I featured a full mix by Femme en Fourrure here a few months ago for Get Dressed to This: La Vie De Luxe, but to celebrate their newest mix (which can be found over at Discobelle), I thought I’d post their beautiful, yet slightly disturbing video for their track “Plump Biscuit.” Note the models’ use of Melissa Anglomania Lady Dragon shoes!

Melissa Brasil: Fall/Winter Collection Out!

17 Mar

It’s Schoolgirl Cool over at Melissa, the amazing Brazilian company that is the source of my shoe affections. With their recyclable plastics, good company ethics, and innovative designs, Melissa wins my heart every time. The fall/winter collection  (as Brazil’s getting a bit colder right now as we warm up) “Melissa Et Circenses” revives some of the left-overs from the most recent “Love Pirates” and “Afromania” collections with extra cute details like stitching, buttons, and even cherries! I hope you enjoy the new collection as much as I do, and be sure to take a look at the older ones. It also helps that the music for each video lookbook is great!
