I <3 Mondays: Looking Up

24 May

Oldies But Goodies

On New York subways, people rarely look at each other. They look up, they look across, they look through. . . anywhere to avoid eye contact. One of benefits of wearing interesting shoes is that I can at least entertain my fellow public transportation patrons as they look in the most common direction: down.

My latest Melissas, pictured above, are from an older season and bear an even older image: that of original Disney character Oswald, a poor little ignored rabbit that has fallen off the Disney radar thanks to Mickey and Co. Yet somehow, in this new rendering of an old cartoon, Oswald reclaimed fame. Similarly, I’d like to bring back the art of eye contact. It’s odd that our eyes are oft closed in a city that supposedly never sleeps.

Speaking of sleep, I am exhausted, but wanted to leave you all with a lullaby for adults. Typically, the mix I do for I <3 Mondays is to start your day, but this one is for you to end it. With this melodic mix of progressive house and soul, the Rraul.com crew brings it home with this Colors Church podcast hosted by DJs Jota Wagner and Wander A (and, to its credit, a case of beer). It’s so beautiful that it actually made me cry on the bus yesterday, though I am not sure if I did so more from the music or from the saudades I felt when I heard Brazilian Portuguese again (the first few minutes consist of the hosts describing upcoming shows and parts of their set).

Nevertheless, give this mix a listen as you lay your head down on your pillow, or even as you commute in the morning. Hopefully, it will compel you to look up, see the world with open eyes, and take in all the beauty you can hold.

I <3 Mondays: The New Friday?

9 May

Making Over Mondays?

Over time, Fridays in New York City have become the odd night out. Thursday is the new Saturday, Saturday is still pretty solid, Wednesday is quickly becoming the new Thursday, and so on. Friday, however, has regressed into schoolnight-dom, rendering thousands of New Yorkers bored on the night that should be the perfect night to go out. While there are still certainly some solid parties out there, like Panty Raid at Savalas with DJs Sammy Bananas and Cousin Cole on the decks, as well as the Boys & Girls $1 parties that pretty much saved Webster Hall from a further downward spiral into nightclub extinction (at least from an outsider’s perspective), but for the most part, Friday is a pretty mellow night.

Most people are exhausted from work, school, and the generally panic-inducing rush that is a typical New Yorker’s Monday through Friday hustle routine, so when Friday comes around, staying home watching a movie with a bottle of wine (or Jack, if that’s your thing) sounds much sexier than putting forth the effort to actually get ready to go out.

On the basis of the aforementioned, part of me has begun to wonder whether or not Monday might just be the new Friday. . . With parties happening as early as Tuesday, Monday might be right up there as the next major night on the partygoer mindmap. We may begin to live our lives completely in reverse, with Monday becoming a day that doesn’t quite suck as much as we thought, and our weekends being a time to have all to ourselves.

For this I <3 Monday mix, after careful deliberation, I’ve chosen this dark, yet sexy mix for We Play Music (UK) by Qoso. May it help you turn your Monday into the new Friday . . .

I <3 Mondays: Afro-Cuban Shaft

2 May

I was checking out the White Light Mix Series site today (they’ve moved, by the way, to www.whitelightmixes.com), and per usual, they delivered. They have several new mixes up, including a fantastic mix by Moullinex, that makes one feel a bit like the the Afro-Cuban Shaft. It opens with a track that’s straight out of a 1970s blaxploitation film, fittingly titled “Pursuit of the Pimpmobile” and created by the one and only Isaac Hayes, only to be followed by lots of percussion and flute-heavy disco sounds that will take the illness I like to call The Mondays right off your mind.

This mix is fun, light, and certainly a good way to start you work week. I love Mondays, especially when they sound like this:

I <3 Mondays: A Day Full of Soul

18 Apr

This weekend for me was a little more mellow than the last, and it reminded me that despite appearances and my history, I am indeed capable of relaxing (if I put my mind to it, as ironic as that may be in the case of actual relaxation). Considering the tone for these past weekend days, I am hoping that my Monday somehow ends up just as chill. Even if it doesn’t, here’s hoping that this mellow old-school soul, jazz-like, and deep house filled mix from the Roundtable Knights will do the trick of convincing me otherwise. And while this mix is clearly slower in tempo than the usual stuff, don’t be fooled by its initially slow pace. It picks up quickly and has several awwww yeah! moments around 39 min.

Happy Monday!

I <3 Mondays: Hardcore

11 Apr

This weekend went by way too fast! Since Thursday, I’ve been out every night and have had very little sleep, so I can already tell Monday is going to be an adventure, to say the least. I’ve got to have some motivational music that helps get me going the rough way. No nuevo disco or downtempo for this Monday. I need something a little more hardcore.

Taking into account that this might be my roughest Monday in a long time, I thought I’d pick something that spoke a little more to my aggressive side to help me stay awake and alert throughout the day. That said, I give you, for your listening pleasure, a mix by Raphael “Raph” Grau:

Mix On Tap + I <3 Mondays: Pastels

5 Apr

While I recognize that it’s Monday, and typically the Mix on Tap post falls on a weekend day (or close to it), my Monday got off to a rough start. It’s a day I felt came way too fast, even though I was a total waste of space all weekend!

In order to retroactively celebrate Easter, to commemorate everyone’s favorite day of the week, and to get a little drunky drunk on a school night, today’s Mix on Tap meets I <3 Mondays is all about pastels. Pastel colors represent Easter and spring quite well, but they also signifiy the essence of light, the coming of something good, and the quelling of darkness, if you will.

Monday is a “dark day” for most of us, so why not lighten it up a bit with a little pastel alcoholic goodness? Or even if you don’t feel like drinking, this mix will surely put you in a light mood. If you do both, though, be sure to drink responsibly and please please please don’t overdo it. Afterall, you’ve got work tomorrow.

Antonio Alves – Mix #24 for Mamilo (via mamilo.org)

a note on this mix: It’s super mellow and a really nice mix for relaxing after a long day on the job. It’s from Mamilo.org, an amazing Portuguese music site that’s chock full of great music. Click to play, or follow the link to mamilo.org to download.

I <3 Mondays: Fan-Funkin'-Tastic

28 Mar

I can’t believe it’s already Monday. In what seems like the shortest weekend I have ever lived through, I managed to get a great deal of things accomplished, though not nearly enough. The dreaded first day of the work week is upon us all once again, but there’s no shortage of hope in the morning motivation that comes to us care of Jacques Renault, who recently released this super funk-tastic mix.

I <3 Mondays: Drlkt Freddie Preview

14 Mar

Drlkt Freddie

We recently had the great pleasure of interviewing and photographing DJ/producer duo Drlkt Freddie. Though the interview, photos, and Retail DJ Exclusive Mix won’t be up until later, I thought I’d give you all a preview of what they’re working with, so to speak. This mix, in its heavy bass and overall fabulosity, will definitely help you start your Monday off right. It might even give you flashbacks of an amazing weekend you spent out (considering this weekend was not the best time to go out on account of the craptastic weather here in NYC). I hope this makes up for the lost time. Enjoy and stay posted for more news on Drlkt Freddie:

I <3 Mondays: Discotheque dans le Metro

28 Feb

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I am a die-hard fan of the White Light Mix Series. They are some of the best mixes on the web, for sure, if you consider music choice, consistency, and the overall ability to both relax and motivate AT THE SAME TIME. I didn’t know it was possible, but it is, thanks to these amazing musical gems. These mixes are great for a cure of The Mondays because they allow you to be productive while having a little aural fun. For this week’s I <3 Mondays post, check out the newest White Light Mix by DJ Eleven. With its opening of Simian Mobile Disco’s and Beth Ditto’s pairing to an awesome remix of  ”Love Can’t Turn Around,” this mix is sure to make your Monday a little . . . brighter.

I particularly liked DJ Eleven’s note on the mix:

“When Matty C first told me about the White Light series, he kept coming back to a description of listening to music while driving at night. Since most of us in New York City don’t drive, traveling music has to be approached differently. So I set out to make a mix from records I never get a chance to play out that would provide the perfect soundtrack to the walking, turnstile hopping, dude-selling-his-beat-tape-out-front-of-Fat Beats-avoiding, taxi-hailing, dollar-van-riding, slice-grabbing, coffee-on-the-run-drinking, and then walking a little more that is getting around the Rotten Apple.”

As a New Yorker who is always on the go with little time to just sit and think EXCEPT when I am in transit (how ironic), I found that DJ Eleven’s note was really fitting. This mix also happens to include a ton of songs and artists we have featured regularly on this site. Holler! :-)

I <3 Mondays: Mustang

21 Feb

Usually, when I think of Mustangs, the first thing to come to mind is the car. Next? The horse after which is was named. (How’s that for amazing branding?) But right after that, my mind goes to Renaud Deru and Andy Faisca, the Belgian DJ duo that makes up Mustang, one of Gomma’s newest label signings. Continuing with Gomma’s usual funk-filled disco rock and roll sound, Mustang brings it home with this mix they did for Juno Plus:

Mustang - Gomma Mixtape (for JunoPlus) (dl/play)

Tracklist:

1. Roberto Rodriguez aka Manolo – Lose Myself
2. The Revenge – Just Be Good To Me
3. Who Made Who – I Lost My Voice (Golden Bug Remix)

7. Mighty Mouse – Song For Ellen
8. Music Go Music – Warm In The Shadows (Villa Remix)

I <3 Mondays: Voltei de Vaycay

16 Feb

Just in case you were curious, there was no I <3 Mondays post yesterday because I was off for Presidents’ Day! Yay for holidays. I take them far more seriously these days, though I still somehow end up working on something else. As of late, that been my baby, my side interest, my special project: Retail DJ. Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to interview Felix Flores, a very talented artist who expresses himself in both his music and his style. I emailed several other designers and DJs who will be interviewed for the site soon. I ordered custom business cards. I put the word out for interviewees for the Summer of 2010 I answered the question, “What Is Retail DJ?”

All in all, this wasn’t exactly a holiday. But I spent my time “off” doing something I love. In just a month and a half, Retail DJ has grown considerably as a result of a lot of hard work on my end and the tremendous support of friends, fans, style saavy consumers, creators, and music lovers. Every time I think about the possibility of someone clicking a link, listening to a mix, or viewing a photo on this site, I become overcome with joy from its potential. That’s what Retail DJ is all about: the mutual exchange of exposure and gaining knowlege in the realm of fashion and music. With each view, someone out there is learning something, and with each post I put up and extremely talented person I interview, so am I.

Today’s I <3 Mondays Tuesday post, though, is for those who DO actually take vacation. As an homage to Carnaval season, Brazilian-born (Sao Paulo represent!) DJ Joyce Muniz (the musical darling of Man Recordings, a record label based in Germany that supports an amazing set of Brazilian DJs including Edu K) has created a mix of samba, kuduru (Luso-African music that combines traditional sounds with electronic beats), funk carioca (known in the States as “baile funk”), house, and a ton of tracks that will make returning from your mini-vaycay a lot easier.

May this mix take you to a place where sequins, feathers, and glitter mean far more than an Elton John performance at the Grammy’s. Seja bem-vindo ao Brasil!

tracklist is available in the Music Archive

*Joyce Muniz presently lives in Austria, but will be in NYC at Le Poisson Rouge on May 14th! Ebaaa!!! More on this as the date approaches.

I <3 Mondays: Soul Clap

7 Feb

Soul Clap

Yes, it’s already that time of the week again. Monday is in 3 hours and my weekend is gone before it seems it even got started. What’s been keeping me mentally afloat these days, particularly as I attempt to stay focused and calm with all the craziness happening swirling around me, is the flawlessSound podcast delivered by Soul Clap:

the flawlessSound podcast no. 32 w/ Soul Clap (dl free on iTunes)

Soul Clap, whose track “Kissing Game” I featured in the Retail DJ February Tracklist, have a penchant for 80s and 90s R&B tracks, but put more of a soul/deep house feel to them in order to go heavy on the nostalgia, but light on the boredom factor (I am not a big R&B fan). If you liked what you heard, please check out their site and more of their mixes (which are amazing). They will be in NYC on the 27th, so don’t miss that either! Happy Monday!

I <3 Mondays: Cassius a Falling Star

31 Jan

Catching a falling star is a) really hard and b) not possible (because technically, they are meteorites!). But every now and then, with the power of a lot of hope, determination, luck, and work, our most difficult of goals, using the falling star as a metaphor here of course, can be achieved, “caught” at the most unlikely of times as they seem to fall far out of range. I recall saying in an early Oldies But Goodies post (with 1999 as the theme) that I had an amazing mix from French duo Cassius on my ipod with no name, meaning there was little hope of finding it. And considering I don’t direct host files on this site as of yet, I thought there would be no way of sharing it with the readers if I ever were to find it.

Alas, I have great news!

1. I found the mix. As I mentioned before, it’s a live DJ set by Cassius recorded at the 1999 Winter Music Conference in Miami. It’s a smattering of house, funk, dub, dancehall, soul, and quite a few other genres. I will never forget the day I downloaded it from the Astralwerks site, with a smile on my face and a sparkle in my eye, as I knew I was getting my hands on a piece of audio gold.

2. At the (quite helpful) suggestion of Ezrakh (man of many talents who will be profiled on this site very soon), I created a Soundcloud page for Retail DJ, so sharing great music with you will be more easily accomplished.

With that, I give you one amazingly funk-i-fied mix to start off your week. Please note that this mix will only be available for a little time for download, so be sure to play and download fast! Time is already running out :-)

I <3 Mondays: Angry (and adequate)

24 Jan

This afternoon, I woke up with mysterious bruises, a killer headache, and very sore neck. The reason? A lot of dancing at the Brodinski show, and the rest: unknown. Tomorrow is Monday, already, and I shockingly did not get everything I needed to have done accomplished this weekend. I worked Friday, went to the NSR show Friday night, slept an hour and a half then worked Saturday, took a disco nap, went to Brodinski, and slept. Here I am, on the quick eve of a new week of work, feeling sore, busted, and altogether brain dead, but I know I will be ok tomorrow. I’ve got good music on my side.

I remember when I first started getting into music blogs and finding really amazing stuff. One of these amazing finds was a mix by DJ Die Young and Etan. It somehow managed to always make me really happy whenever I’d play it and made me dance when I least expected to be in the mood to (ok, wait, I’m lying. I’m always in the mood to dance). This mix, while it has some mellow points, is really good for Mondays because there’s enough hard and heavy to make you dance, but just enough similarity between the tracks to keep from distracting you. It works well as background music to motivate you as you start everything all over again. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do! As per usual, the tracklist can be found in the Music Archive.

I <3 Mondays: Get Your $'s Worth

10 Jan

It’s been a busy weekend. I came back from Memphis, met up with some old friends, was introduced to some new ones, interviewed a dj, met an mc, and went into scheduling overdrive for some upcoming “Get Ready With __?__” posts. Overall, it was a productive couple of days. But now as the sun has officially set on the two days that keep most of us from going nuts during the week, it’s time to start all over again.

Yes, in a few hours, it will be Monday. Considering one of my sole responsibilities here at Retail DJ is to provide music to get you amped about, well, everything, I didn’t want to let you down. This week’s I <3 Mondays mix comes straight from Britain by way of Berlin in the likes of a ginger decks fiend named Oliver $ (pronounced “Oliver Dollar,” though for the longest, I was calling him “Oliver Money,” because that sounds gangsta too). I found out about him a while back and finally had the opportunity to see him spin when the Made to Play crew + DJ Gina Turner rolled into town on December 8th, dropping some killer mixes and a whole lot of energy at Love in the East Village.

The mix I have featured for today’s post is Mr. $’s Fabric promo mix. It opens hard with a track that will most certainly wake you up (and quite possibly make you belligerent) called “Bitch Fight” and smooths into lighter beats like old school  house track “The Answer.”

All in all, this mix will make your Monday start off on a happy foot, or at least one that’s tapping a litle on your commute to work.

I<3 Mondays: Put on Some Little Boots

4 Jan

Hopefully, by the time this post goes up, I’ll be en route to the airport (yes, again) on my way home to Memphis, TN to visit ma famille for a few days. One of the interesting things about Memphis is that it’s the home of blues, not to be mistaken for the country music hub, which is Nashville, TN. Back in the day, Memphis used to be one of the major the go-to place if you wanted to get started in the music industry, particularly as an artist from the South. Nowadays, Atlanta and Nashville have taken over as the southern musical hotspots, but Memphis still has come out with some interesting music as of late, albeit more in the rap genre than blues or jazz.

But this post isn’t so much about Memphis as it is Mondays. I recognize that Mondays are hard, particularly the Monday after a long weekend of partying to welcome in the New Year. Often viewed with a lot of anger and filed away in the stress-inducing zone, Mondays are rarely one’s favorite day. But I am hoping to add a little bit of joy into the first official work day of the week (AND of the year!) with a little mix from none other than Little Boots.

Little Boots wasn’t always famous. She, too, had her moment of discovery, mainly thanks to the bloggers who supported her from the beginning and a whole lot of drive. Her style and musical talent didn’t hurt either, of course, helping her become one of the most popular breakout musical European stars in the States in recent years. Her success here is particularly marked by the fact that electronic music and anything with a hint of such a genre took a long time to become established in the U.S., despite the fact that most of the popular music we listen to here involves electronic musical production in the background. Neverless, stubborn U.S. audiences have embraced Little Boots, for the most part, and are helping her continued growth in the music industry.

With all that said, I proudly present some of Little Boots OLD OLD OLD work, all the way from 2008, before she was rocking out in videos and was simply some icy blonde tickling the keys for internet audiences. This is a mix she created back in the day that, while short, is a nice blend of mellow tracks with a few sassy notes to accent your early Monday morning vesting. Enjoy getting dressed to this!
