Cajmere: Funky Fresh for 5 Mix

20 Feb

Curtis Jones aka Cajmere aka Green Velvet

What better a way to celebrate Presidents’ Day than by honoring one of the forefathers of house? Cajmere, the Chicago-based genius we also know and love as Green Velvet, has put out a new mix tape for 5 Magazine, a publication with the valiant purpose of championing one of the city’s contributions to the United States and the world. His new mix, the 4th volume in a series called “Funky Fresh for 5″ covers typical sounds of the Cajmere/Green Velvet repertoire, ranging from gospel-house to outer space loops. He even delves into the progressive house realm towards the middle of the mix. This upbeat set is sure to keep you moving your feet on this beautiful day.

Be sure to stream/download this mix. If you’re hungry for more, check out Cajmere live in the mix for 5 Magazine on Wednesdays from 1-4 EST/12-3 CST here.

P.S. My first introduction to Cajmere (I didn’t realize Green Velvet and Cajmere were the same guy at the time) came via this scene in Party Girl, one of my favorite movies to date):

Retail DJ March 2011 Podcast

17 Mar

For the first time in, well, ever (?), I am putting up the monthly podcast weeks before the last day. That’s cause for celebration. Another aspect of this podcast worthy of a hoorah is the fact that I recorded it all on my new mixer! You see, I previously had the difficult task of manually placing each song next to another, manually attempting to beatmatch when possible, crossfading almost all of the time, from one song to the next. But now, with the help of modern technology, this podcast is going to get increasingly better over time. Note that this recording was made after only one week of playing with the mixer (a Vestax vci-300 mk II + Serato/Itch), so there are a few mistakes. However, I am really proud of this and know that they will only get better with time and additional practice.

This mix includes new (and old) tracks by several of my favorite artists. I wanted to make something relaxing and danceable all at once, so I consulted some of the best, including: Joyce Muniz, Homework, Jesse Rose, and others who bring a guaranteed dance beat with every track they make. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did putting it together!

Get Dressed To This: Shower Scene

12 Feb

Your skin's screaming for some TLC!

We often play music when we get ready, but shower time usually gets neglected or left to the torture of our own voices across the plastic curtain. Yeah, singing in the shower is fine, but every now and then, you need an actual track. Whereas most are known for putting their vocal cords to the test under the nozzle, I give my feet some work by dancing in the shower instead. So when Homework came out with a 15 minute mix for Data Transmission, I knew I had found my soundtrack.

The mix features some old favorites along with some new stuff and a slightly more soulful sound. Oh and did I mention it’s great to dance to?

But beyond dancing, I wanted to actually provide you with some product suggestions for curing winter dryness without wasting time as all these products can be used in the shower! Anyway, lather up and Get [showered] Dressed To This:

3. Brown Sugar Body Polish by Fresh: this citrus-y delight is super refreshing and helps buff away flaky, dead, dry skin in just one use

4. Face Butter by Carol’s Daughter: while it sounds like a facial skin nightmare, this moisture-rich, non-greasy treatment helps keep your face radiant in the cold

5. Advanced Care Moisturizing Cream by Aveeno: a leader in dry skin care, Aveeno’s moisturizing cream is excellent for dry, cracked skin (try sleeping with it on covered hands and feet at night to wake up with super soft results)

6. Egyptian Fennel with Grapefruit & Sweet Orange Lipcare by Pangea Organics: keeps your lips moisturized and soft without a greasy mess

Retail DJ Septober Podcast, Part 2: The Mellow

1 Nov

In the first Septober Podcast: The Model, I encouraged you to “werk it” with the catwalk-worthy tracks I included as your diva/o soundtrack. But for this podcast, part two of the Septober series, I wanted to provide you with some music that while still active, was a bit more mellow in tone. The vibe is funky, soulful, and a whole lot of fun. As I mentioned in the post for part 1 of this podcast, the set includes some of my favorite tracks (among hundreds I went through during the months of September and October), including a track produced by Retail DJ featured artist EZRAKH. The vibe of this podcast is positive and at times even a little romantic (though not cheesy in the slightest). I hope you enjoy!

Retail DJ May Podcast

28 Jul

Taking a cue from the folks over at Too Many Sebastians, I thought I’d pay a little homage to the now-famous Brazilian DJ Duo The Twelves. Their remixes are sick, and I’ve included my favorites in this podcast. Based on the May tracklist, this podcast is short and sweet, at only about 36 minutes, but it’s enough to get a party going in your pocket (via your iPod of course!), to wake you up at work, or motivate you before getting your stomp on at the club.

Enjoy!

Retail DJ May Tracklist: Lost

29 May

Lost, the infamously puzzling, cryptic, and overly dramatic television (that I admit to have loved) is over. What I will do in the meantime to seek complete, televised fulfillment, I am not sure, but I know that music always makes everything better. That’s why this tracklist, Retail DJ’s 5th, has all to do with Lost.

See the tracklist below and follow along! Also, just as an FYI, if you download all of these, set the crossfader on your iTunes to 7 to 8 seconds, and play them in order, it all flows pretty well. As per usual, click to play, click the small arrow to download. Enjoy!

I <3 Mondays: The New Friday?

9 May

Making Over Mondays?

Over time, Fridays in New York City have become the odd night out. Thursday is the new Saturday, Saturday is still pretty solid, Wednesday is quickly becoming the new Thursday, and so on. Friday, however, has regressed into schoolnight-dom, rendering thousands of New Yorkers bored on the night that should be the perfect night to go out. While there are still certainly some solid parties out there, like Panty Raid at Savalas with DJs Sammy Bananas and Cousin Cole on the decks, as well as the Boys & Girls $1 parties that pretty much saved Webster Hall from a further downward spiral into nightclub extinction (at least from an outsider’s perspective), but for the most part, Friday is a pretty mellow night.

Most people are exhausted from work, school, and the generally panic-inducing rush that is a typical New Yorker’s Monday through Friday hustle routine, so when Friday comes around, staying home watching a movie with a bottle of wine (or Jack, if that’s your thing) sounds much sexier than putting forth the effort to actually get ready to go out.

On the basis of the aforementioned, part of me has begun to wonder whether or not Monday might just be the new Friday. . . With parties happening as early as Tuesday, Monday might be right up there as the next major night on the partygoer mindmap. We may begin to live our lives completely in reverse, with Monday becoming a day that doesn’t quite suck as much as we thought, and our weekends being a time to have all to ourselves.

For this I <3 Monday mix, after careful deliberation, I’ve chosen this dark, yet sexy mix for We Play Music (UK) by Qoso. May it help you turn your Monday into the new Friday . . .
