Now Playing: Music for Your NYE

31 Dec

I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Eve, but as a big music lover, I can’t help but contribute to the night’s festivities with a gift from me to you. For those of you who are staying home instead of joining the throngs of revelers out in the streets, or throwing smaller parties instead of going to blowout bashes, here are two mixes that may set the mood for you and your guests. One is a bit more on the house-y side, while the other is more of a booty dancing delight. Enjoy (click to play):

Kim Ann Foxman – Creature (+ Live Set from Sao Paulo!)

4 Nov

Kim Ann Foxman (photo credit: deepbeep

I just got home from seeing Leo Justi, EZRAKH, Krunk Pony, and Cool Hand Luke DJ at Zamaan Bar in Brooklyn thinking that my night could not get any better (seriously, they tore it up), when I saw this on Facebook (via Alexander Technique):

so . . .

a) I love most videos in b&w

b) I love any showcasing of vogue and derivative forms of dance

and c) beyond being really interesting visually, this track is hot. I can already imagine Azari & III making a sick remix of it (if you’re reading this, remix noooow).

But being totally serious, Kim Ann Foxman has been DJing for some time (and is really good live, I should add) but may be most well-known from her work with Hercules and Love Affair (you can catch her here playing the glasses in the video, though she technically did some vocal work on the track as well (along with track lead Nomi Ruiz, who went on to form Jessica 6)).

For Kim Ann Foxman’s DJing, check out this set she did in 2009 at Vegas Club in Sao Paulo for the Ludo party:

Retail DJ Septober Podcast, Part 2: The Mellow

1 Nov

In the first Septober Podcast: The Model, I encouraged you to “werk it” with the catwalk-worthy tracks I included as your diva/o soundtrack. But for this podcast, part two of the Septober series, I wanted to provide you with some music that while still active, was a bit more mellow in tone. The vibe is funky, soulful, and a whole lot of fun. As I mentioned in the post for part 1 of this podcast, the set includes some of my favorite tracks (among hundreds I went through during the months of September and October), including a track produced by Retail DJ featured artist EZRAKH. The vibe of this podcast is positive and at times even a little romantic (though not cheesy in the slightest). I hope you enjoy!

EZRAKH – “77 Theme”

24 Sep

EZRAKH sent me this video at the crack of dawn when we were talking shop. It’s of a completely original track he produced called “77 Theme.” It’s a bit like what would happen if the music of Tacteel, Thomas Bangalter, Roska, and Moodymann had a baby and left it on the doorstep of a talented producer and DJ from Rahway, New Jersey. Fortunately, their offspring would be in good hands considered it would be well cared for by a young man whose creative genius is endless. Check it out:

Special Event: Warehouse Saturday at House of Yes

6 Aug

EZRAKH sent me this info on a party he was spinning at House of Yes on Saturday, then it blew up. Every five seconds, a new DJ/special guest was added until the lineup looked like something even more fierce than it already was. On top of EZRAKH playing (and for those of you who have heard his mixes or saw him live at the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase on Wednesday, you know this is a very very good thing), DJ Reck, K-Swift, and DJ Sega are DJing. In other words, everyone’s going to be walking a little funny Sunday morning. . . that is, if their feet still work at all after all that dancing.

DO NOT MISS THIS. I repeat: DO NOT MISS THIS!

IT’S ONLY $7. You’d be crazy to pass this up. Oh, and did I mention the party got a shoutout in the Village Voice?!?! Yeah. Peep that.

Get Dressed to This: Late Night Groove

3 Aug

B.East, venue for the Retail DJ "Get Dressed for This" Showcase

One thing that I considering one of my personal values is always giving credit when it’s due. Above all else, I find that it’s important to recognize people for their talent, for their contributions, and for their hard work. I don’t give people praise whom I don’t feel deserve it. I take that seriously here at Retail DJ, especially considering the hundreds of songs and mixes I listen to on a daily basis, filtering out all the crap so that you all can get nothing but the goods.

I say all of this because the mixes I have included this week for the Get Dressed to This Megapost leading up the big event really all are great and have some meaning to me. For today’s mix, I have a set that came to me by way of EZRAKH. I asked him if he could put together something especially for this, and he created this phenomenal mix without hesitation (and in such a short time frame, might I add). This mix is a follow up to his first Late Night Grooves Mix, which you can find HERE. In volume two, he pulls out all the stops, turning it into a curated audio museum of house music, ranging from the American Chicago/Detroit style to French House to the more recent incarnation of tech house. Infused with some soul and funk, the mix as a whole is a complete work and one that is truly reflective of the type of music you will hear from him Wednesday night (though, to be sure, this is just a sampling – you ain’t heard nothin’ yet until you see him play live).

In terms of the outfit, I’ve put together what would have been my outfit for the party. This dress was the runner up for tomorrow night, but I chose another dress at the last minute. This dress has a few grooves of its own, which you can see if you do a zoom on the AllSaints site. With slight texturing and subtle blue and peach stripes, this dress, though delicate in color, is heavy on the tailoring, with the rigid draping (oxymoronic, yes, but accurate) going on inside and out.

Anyway, check out the awesomeness and Get Dressed to This:

Special Event: EZRAKH @ House of Yes

23 Jun

I saw EZRAKH perform at House of Yes recently, and homeboy “tore it up,”‘ are we say in the South. He’ll be back again this Friday to DJ for the (Un)official Afro-Punk Fest Kick-off Party. King’s County, Moruf “Moo,” and DJ Chuck will also be performing, so if you’re in Brooklyn or just feel like taking a trip down to Bushwick to dance your ass off, get ‘er done! I can attest that a House of Yes party with EZRAKH at the musical helm is one you will wake up sore from the next day. The party is raw, the beats are contagious, and the vibe is friendly, open, and energetic.

Here’s a little reminder of his skills to get you excited. I recommend you download it considering that EZRAKH is so prolific that before you can download your favorite mix, a new one will be up in its place!)

Week in Review

6 Jun

Ouch

As I mentioned on the Retail DJ Facebook Fan page, my sincerest apologies for there having been no new posts this weekend. I have had an out-of-this-world headache since Friday afternoon which, along with the massive heat and humidity combo, released its wrath upon me, making my partying stop Friday night as well as my writing. Fortunately, I was a trooper and completed two interviews and a lot of transcribing to get you all ready for this week (in which I have a few interviews, the usual series of mixes, and a lot of other goodies coming up).

In the meantime, I have a little week in review from the shows I went to prior to my weekend coming to a halt thanks to pain. . .

1. Wednesday – Kraak & Smaak + Lauren Flax

Let me just say that the weekday party idea will always be a solid venture I support, particularly if the party gets started at 7 and allows me to dance and get home before the trains get totally wonky. I missed the opening group, but had the opportunity to see Lauren Flax and later Kraak & Smaak of the Netherlands DJ. Both of their respective sets were amazing, with Flax playing more hyper, upbeat tracks of an electro sort and Kraak & Smaak bringing in a little funk and soul in remixed form to keep the party going. The crowd was relatively small (my guess is that this had to do with a) it being an early Wednesday night show and b) the fact that people don’t do their research, so they didn’t know who Kraak & Smaak were, despite their pretty successful single in the States “Squeeze Me” (the video for which you can see here)). Overall, it was a great party, and thanks to the space, I officially got my dance on pretty hardcore. :-)

2. Thursday – DJ Falcon + JDH

DJ Falcon is truly a legend in the electronic music scene, particularly as he has played a pivotal role in the development and proliferation of French house music. With all this mind, I was of course incredibly excited that he was coming to NYC. It was one of those omgwetmypants moments when I read that he would be here via the Santos site. He lived up to expecations and then some, dropping some old school French house that almost made me cry (nostalgia!) along with some hip hop, pop, and other suprises that made for a solid set. JDH, as per usual, impressed the crowd with his nuevo disco and funk records (and yes, I mean records-homeboy was playing with vinyl!). I also met lots of French people (who had clearly come out to support their fellow countryman) and saw lots of men dancing up a storm (which is so rare these days that seeing it makes me wonder if my eyes are alright). Fun night, great crowd – AKA do not miss him if he ever comes again!

3. Friday – EZRAKH

I had never been to House of Yes in Bushwick before, but had heard good things. One minus: no a/c (and Friday  night was definitely an a/c night). One plus: people actually get down. It lacks the pretentiousness and self-consciousness that some crowds seem plagued by. There was none of that here. People were fine with being a sweaty mess so long as it meant dancing to the music. In this case, the music was supplied by none other than EZRAKH, whose musical range during his set went from MIA’s “Born Free” into dubstep and UK funky, then later into funk carioca, house, and then some. He even managed to drop “I’m Not Your Lemonade” from the Major Lazer meets La Roux mashup mixtape Lazerproof and Dam Funk’s rendition of Cubic Zirconia’s “Fuck Work,” all of which are favorites around these parts and obviously with the crowd as well! Despite his being more “underground” at this stage, he puts so many well-known DJs to shame with his music choice and skills. Whenever you see that EZRAKH’s playing, free up your calendar and go!

So all in all, despite my having the headache of the century, my Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights combined made up for my weekend, half of which I spent in bed, half of which I spent interviewing, and none of which I spent partying (unless my commute + iPod and some guy hitting on me as I took out the trash constitute as partying).

Mix On Tap: Wheels of Steel

1 May

Though most DJs use digital turntables these days, and the only wheels of steel might be those turning inside their MacBook Pro, there are plenty of DJs out there who work with music as if they are still dealing with vinyl. Each song serves a purpose, each minute has meaning. I like to call them the William Faulkners and Ernest Hemingways of the music world. For those of you not familiar with the aforementioned authors’ respective work and writing style, I’ll do my best to summarize.

Much like Jose Saramago and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Faulker utilized long, descriptive, mind-enveloping sentences, whereas Hemingway, a man truly always on the go, allowed his writing to mirror his lifestyle: quick, fleeting, yet meaningful. Apparently, both authors agonized over their sentences, taking considerable amounts of time to make them perfect.

Some DJs (thankfully) utilize the same practice, picking and choosing the tracks in their mixes with careful precision. One such DJ is the frequently-lauded and super prolific EZRAKH. We feature him on Retail DJ enough to make him our patron saint, I know, but his talent warrants the recognition. This time, he’s dropped a hot mix of Uk Garage, Dubstep, and some dark, yet soulful tracks. There’s even a nod to James Brown towards the end. Even if you are not into dubstep, this mix is worth checking out.

That said, this week, I give you a Mix On Tap that will touch the most industrial side of yourself, the steely interior that needs a little warming by way of dancing and drinking. The music, as mentioned is by Retail DJ favorite EZRAKH and the drink comes to us by way of drinkmixer.com. Have an awesome Saturday night, and party like tomorrow will never come.

Dancerock Will Never Die

19 Apr

Dancerock, the fabulous sonic culmination of all the good things in rock and dance music, is great for those of us who find ourselves safely on the musical fence. I like all types of music, and sometimes the ADD that kills my braincells and my iPod battery makes it hard for me to stay focused on one particular genre. Luckily, dancerock exists to fill the void.

Some dancerock artists include The Rapture, CSS, The Klaxons, and New Young Pony Club, to name a few of many of the groups who got their starts in the earlier half of the 2000s and blew up in the later half of the decade, found their way into this awesome mix by EZRAKH, a favorite around these parts and force to be reckoned with. Check out the mix he did for Formatic, a clothing store/blog/all-around website worth taking a looksie beyond just the mix. Click below for more details and the mixxxxxxxxx! Enjoy!!!

The Hood Internet make the best mashups you’ve ever heard… these guys play all the music we love… at once!

Telephoned are getting a huge industry buzz right now… here is what Pitchfork said about their SxSW show: “It really shouldn’t work. A nerdy DJ and super hot singer doing blog-house versions of popular R&B hits? That seems like an awful idea. But oh man, does it work, especially at this performance at the Fool’s Gold showcase, which was the most fun thing I’ve seen at SXSWso far.”
