Pop Makeovers

25 Mar

I don’t listen to a ton of pop music, and sometimes when I step into a club where the DJs play “top 40,” I feel like an alien. Fortunately, when pop DOES find its way in my radar, it’s been chopped, screwed, refixed, remixed, and reborn. The most recent pop makeovers come to us by The Hood Internet, whose mashup of Hercules and Love Affair with Nicki Minaj redeemed the princess of rap, and DJ Van Scott (1/2 of Drlkt Freddie) who sent me a remix of Ke$ha’s “Sleazy” that gives the song (and the artist) a whole new face.

The two songs are polar opposites, actually, with Scott’s “Sleazy” remix serving as a full-on party track, and the Minaj/H&LA mashup better for a mellow setting. Needless to say, they’re both great. Give them a listen and enjoy:

Drlkt Freddie Featured in IAX Podcast

3 Jun

Dance, too much glitter in the pants. . .

A few days ago, I was at home having a living room dance down to the IAX podcast “Electro House ,Filthy House, Dirty Electro, ohh….and Funky House” when I heard a familiar sound  . . .

That familiarity came by way of Retail DJ favorites Drlkt Freddie, whose track “Boys & Girls” (as remixed by Disco Damage, which was also featured here on Retail DJ recently!). Congrats to Jad and Van for their consistently awesome work!

Boys & Girls, Electroclash Style

18 May

Disco Damage

Two of my favorite people, Van Scott and Jad Cooper, make up the DJ duo Drlkt Freddie. As I discovered in our interviewing and photographing these lads, being nice for them goes far beyond personality. It also trickles down into their music, which quite frankly is nice to a degree of being lethal.

In anticipation of a June 12th Kinetika Records release, the remix of Drlkt Freddie’s “Boys & Girls” has been promoted non-stop. Much to my delight, this remix, done by another duo, Disco Damage, turns “Boys & Girls” into a lovely electroclash-leaning beatfest. Check it out!

Every weekend at the Hester Street Fair in the Lower East Side, ITSA, a rotating set of super-creative and incredibly talented designers/artists will have quite the booth presence. It’s coordinated by Richard Burroughs, whose own talents seem limitless, and whom I was fortunate enough to meet while he DJed at BEast during aRetail DJ interview and photoshoot we did with Drlkt Freddie.

If you’re in the area, be sure to check out the ITSA folks. Their pieces are fantastic!

Sick Boy: Bang Your Head

10 Apr

Wait, not this Sick Boy . . .

Kinetika Records, which has been the label of some of my favorite acts (including Drlkt Freddie, whom I interviewed last month), recently sent a sneak preview of Amsterdam artist Sick Boy’s newest work. While the track will not be officially released until May 8th, here’s a free copy for you to enjoy! It’s definitely a hard one, but we all need a little club headbanging here and there, right?

Oh and as a little bonus, here’s the mixtape that Sick Boy released a while back. Though it’s almost a year old, it’s still incredibly musically pertinent. The mix (which includes tracks by Dizzee Rascal, Little Boots, Edu K, Armand Van Helden, and more) will have you dancing before you know it. Enjoy!

Funk on a Friday . . . *Lay Me Back*

2 Apr

Remember Drlkt Freddie, the DJ wonderboys I interviewed recently who gave us a fun photoshoot and an amazing mix? Well one half of DF has put out his newest track, a collaboration with Streetlab called “Lay Me Back.” In our interview, Van described “Lay Me Back” as:

. . . based in rap/hip hop and it’s about the music hitting you and laying you back, the bassline knocking you out. It’s a song I really like.

The full release will be out on 4/20, but in the meantime, dance a little dance to this one!

These boots are made for . . . droppin' it like it's hot

Though I have listened to this mix maybe about 20 times, it never seems to get old. Get Ready With Drlkt Freddie – The Photoshoot

31 Mar

While talking to Drlkt Freddie at BEast, we learned quite a lot about what makes the dynamic duo tick. We also got an inside peak into their wardrobes as they were nice enough to do more than just drop beats. With us, they got a little derelict and dropped trou. Check out what Jad and Van are working with and Get Ready With Drlkt Freddie!

What’s Good? Drlkt Freddie (Part Three)

31 Mar

Drlkt Freddie

Derelict:

–adjective

1. left or deserted, as by the owner or guardian; abandoned.
2.neglectful of duty; delinquent; negligent.
—Synonyms
2. remiss, careless, heedless.

Continued from Parts One and Two. . .

Why “Drlkt Freddie”? Does it have something to do with Zoolander? What’s the deal?
Van: I love Zoolander! But . . .

Jad and Van:
Nothing to do with Zoolander. [laughs]

Van: No closed deals going on up in here!

Jad: Nope! [all laugh]

Van:
I’ll take on “Freddie.” We were trying to come up with a name, and “Freddie” comes from Freddie Mercury. We are inspired by these classic, glam rock, arena acts musically, conceptually, fashion wise. . . They were beautiful beautiful bands that had beautiful voices and made beautiful music!

Jad: They were so eclectic across the spectrum. I mean, who else, other than Queen, has such a range of performances and songs? They go from rock and roll, blues, and heavy metal to arena rock. Then the performances themselves just rocked arenas around the world. Freddie Mercury was a true showman.

Van: That’s who we aspire to be.

Jad: Also, when Van was a little kid, his family used to call him Freddie.

Van: I don’t know where that came from, though! We couldn’t just stop with Freddie though, because that’s a very polished name. In addition, even though they were kind of underground in terms of style, everyone knows Queen. We needed something to address our underground roots and our upbringing in the clubs where the straights, and the gays, and the trannies were all hanging out and having a great time, all connected with the music and whatever was moving them.

The word “derelict” has a negative connotation, but we flipped the script and made dereliction positive. It’s an underground connection to music that is not widely accepted by the general public, especially in the United States—even in New York City. Europe “gets it” a little more, [and this type of sound is popular in Berlin, Barcelona, London, and other cities.

Jad: It’s also a form of expression. For example, when you go out, what do you want to be? Do you want to be a square, or do you want to be derelict and just let it all out? That’s what dereliction is.

Van: Letting loose and just being yourself.

What’s Good? Drlkt Freddie (Part Two)

30 Mar

Drlkt Freddie (L-R) Van Scott and Jad Cooper

That’s something special, and what I’ve always wanted: to make people dance and feel the music no matter where they are or what they are.

That’s really the basic reason why I got into music and why I started DJing. I wanted to give the same feeling I get from a certain piece of music to other people. It’s about sharing. Now we’re getting hit up by various people from all around the world.

Jad Cooper + Van Scott = Drlkt Freddie

“Opposites attract.” It’s a popular saying that, while related to magnetism, translates directly into the world of human interaction. As cliché as it sounds, particularly when applied to relationships, it’s the best way to describe DJ/producer duo Drlkt Freddie. Made up of two industry veterans in their own right, Van Scott and Jad Cooper, Drlkt Freddie has the goods to move a crowd with their remixes and original tracks, but also possesses the ability to remind listeners that skill and talent are alive and well in a scene dominated by many lacking in both. Having re-worked tracks by Sia, Princess Superstar, and Larry Tee among many others, Drlkt Freddie is on a surefire track to becoming a household name, at least within communities who consider deep bass an alternative to a heartbeat.

In early March, Jad and Van chilled with us at Broadway East, better known as BEast, a bar, lounge, and yummy brunch spot in the Lower East Side. Accompanied by bumping beats in the background by resident BEast Disco Brunch DJ Richard Burroughs, we had the opportunity to find out What’s Good? with Drlkt Freddie. . .

I <3 Mondays: Drlkt Freddie Preview

14 Mar

Drlkt Freddie

We recently had the great pleasure of interviewing and photographing DJ/producer duo Drlkt Freddie. Though the interview, photos, and Retail DJ Exclusive Mix won’t be up until later, I thought I’d give you all a preview of what they’re working with, so to speak. This mix, in its heavy bass and overall fabulosity, will definitely help you start your Monday off right. It might even give you flashbacks of an amazing weekend you spent out (considering this weekend was not the best time to go out on account of the craptastic weather here in NYC). I hope this makes up for the lost time. Enjoy and stay posted for more news on Drlkt Freddie:
