I Love Mondays: French Fries

16 Jan

french fries : model realness

In the U.S., today is a holiday in honor of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. However, I recognize that some you may have been forced to brave your 9-5 today and are in desperate need of some motivational music. Equally in need of some musical motivation are those of you are just now waking up after a long night of 3-day weekend partying, equipped with sore feet, a wicked hangover, and maybe the numbers of people you can’t seem to remember.

In other words, we all need a little aural assistance. Yet fret not, mes amis. Retail DJ is here to save the day . . . or at least make it sound a little better.

For today’s I Love Mondays mix, I’ve chosen a new mix from Paris-based DJ French Fries, whose recent feature for the XLR8R podcast is to die for. Though it alternates from slow to fast, interchanging deep beats for lighter house-y ones, one thing is certainly consistent throughout this mix: its awesomeness. He even includes some ballroom “Ha Dance” reworks by Kingdom and MikeQ and some house-y funk care of none other than DJ Sneak!  The mix, like most of French Fries sets, is dark and deep with just the right amount of fun hidden between the bass.  Have a listen:

I Love Mondays: When Coffee Doesn’t Cut It

8 Aug

It’s 5:30 am and I am still awake. Though I am working on something about which I am quite passionate, I recognize, as I look outside my window and realize that the sun is up, that I will need to get at least 2 hours of sleep soon. But also, in fully understanding that giving myself only 2 hours of sleep considering the tasks that lie ahead is inhumane, I know that an incredibly high impact mix will be more valuable than a cup of coffee today.

While most of you are most likely still asleep, when you DO wake up, you too might be hit with a ton of the Monday morning bricks. Here’s hoping this mix by Buraka Som Sistema’s J-WOW helps you recover:

I Love Mondays: Quiet Storm

15 May

It was a rainy day in NYC and it made me reflect a lot on my music choices on gloomy, wet, and surprisingly cold spring days. While I am normally into the more upbeat, motivational sounds for days of craptastic weather, this time around, I wanted something a little more mellow. I was jonesing for something that would allow me to take advantage of something I rarely have too much of: free time.

The crazy part is that it will be raining all week here in NYC, so I figured this week’s “I Love Mondays” mix should be appropriate for every day between now and next Monday. The mix is aptly titled “Quiet Storm,” and it’s perfect for those rainy afternoons when you just want to kick back with a glass of wine or a warm cup of tea, read a book, and snuggle on the couch or in the bed with your favorite cross-seasonal comforter.

Anyway, have a Happy Monday, especially those of you where rain reigns supreme at the moment!

I Love Mondays: Post-Lunch Slump

25 Apr

Mowgli

Today, I woke up with an insane headache and a nose so clogged that I felt like I needed to take a swig of Drano. Call it allergies or maybe it was just the rain, but something was keeping me down. I needed a little music to help me up. But my brain didn’t really come alive until about 12, and I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to share a great mix with you all to help your day.

This mix was in my spam box, and I unfortunately didn’t see it until about a week later than its release. Nevertheless, I say enjoy something, no matter it’s date or origin. Music is music and 11 days won’t kill a good thing. This house-filled mix is by Mowgli, the uber-talented Michele Savasta, who manages to infuse samples from pop anthem “My Humps” by the Black Eyed Peas with deeper 90s-style dance tracks and soul.

This mix is great for the post-lunch slump (for those of you in office environments, you know EXACTLY what I am talking about), so press play and get ready to start your day over the right way :- )

I Love Mondays: Better Late Than Never

11 Apr

Today, everything was running a bit behind. Though I was efficient and managed to finish everything I needed to within a reasonable time, I was slow as molasses in doing it. It was as if I happened to be stuck in some kind of time fog, with all of my goals in sight, but hidden by the mist that we all know as fatigue.

On top of that, I managed to lose my travel earphones this weekend, meaning I was stuck music-less on the subway, which (for any of you who have had this happen to you can attest) really sucks for multiple reasons, among them: 1) being able to hear men’s catcalls, 2) not having a rhythmic tune to guide your walking pattern, 3) being forced to deal with the person who thinks his phone, sans headphones, is a boombox that we all want to enjoy with him, and 4) crying babies and subway hustlers being your only way of tuning out the guy in number 3. All in all, it’s a terrible experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

But my lack of headphones made me a little bit more aware, so much so that I noticed the man in the aisle next to me also looking for a portable hard drive was none other than Armand Van Helden, Fools Gold bag and all. The funny part is that no one else in the store seemed to notice, which I suppose is the one-two punch, gift and curse of being a DJ. People may know your music but have no idea what you look like. Amazing.

But long story short, and returning back to my original point, there are some days when everything is delayed, a little bit backwards, and just not exactly as you planned them to be, but everything works out in the end. So for this week’s I <3 Mondays mix, I’m bringing you a solid set from an Ohio-based DJ named saint. You’ll be able to find out more on her soon (interview coming out in a few weeks!), but in the meantime, take the next few hours before you go to bed to get a little taste of talent.

saint.’s mix “Return to Chocolate City,” which takes the listener on a trip through soul, house, funk, r&b, and disco (new and old) is unlike many other mixes out there – not only because it’s so freaking good, but also because we actually get to hear the music. saint. lets many of the tracks play out for more than 2 minutes, some in almost their utter entirety, providing a rich dance foundation that so few DJs assume we have the patience for. On top of that, saint. sent me this mix months ago, but the music remains relevant and damn right booty shaking from beginning to end.

Even though it’s the end of the day, loosen up the brain fog with a listen (or five). Be sure to wear comfy shoes during the process, as you will certainly find yourself dancing away your Monday blues!

I Love Mondays: Extended

21 Mar

Normally, the mix I put up for I <3 Mondays is around an hour or less, just enough to give you that extra boost of energy when you need it the most. This time around, however, I wanted to take it into overdrive. Afterall, it’s Monday, and sometimes one boost is not enough.

I have a tendency to wake up late on Mondays, even if I have nothing to do. It’s as if my body says, “No, Retail DJ, recover from the weekend first, THEN worry about getting out of bed.” A chronic oversleeper on the first day of the week, I can’t help but listen to what my biological clock says. My body needs a break, so I succumb to all the peer pressuring of sore limbs, heavy eyelids, and the hangover-like brain pulsing of a serious caffeine addiction. But when I do finally rise, late or not, I need music to reboot. Occasionally, on some days (very much like today), I wake up much earlier than intended. For the first time in forever, I went to bed before 4 am (12 am, actually!), which meant that my body was shocked and awed to the point of waking me up at 5:30 and not letting me return to my slumber.

I just interpreted it as a sign to extend today’s I <3 Mondays mix. Yes, today’s feature is for those of you who have to wake up at the crack of dawn to commute from  another state to get into NYC or who have to take a ferry to your destination or who have to cross interstates and paths with roadkill to approach your office. This is for those of you who wake up early on Monday just to get a head start and outsmart your Monday morning misery. This is for those of you who’d rather pretend Monday morning was Saturday night, and you dance as you put on your clothes.

Shir Khan – Data Transmission Podcast 150

(follow the link above to play + download -or- subscribe here)

tracklist (below) after the jump

The music this time around comes from Shir Khan, care of my favorite Brits over at Data Transmission, whose podcast, as I have mentioned many a time before, might be the best thing since sliced bread. Shir Khan, whose is the mastermind behind Exploited Records, is an excellent DJ, and this seriously funky mix is not to be missed. The podcast very much mirrors what goes on over at Exploited: classic samples are employed, breakbeats somehow find their match in deep house, and Latin percussion loops have a happy marriage with disco vibes. The 2+ hours of music is incredibly well-mixed, has an amazing tracklist, and serves as a seamless presentation of music at its finest.

Let this mix guide you as you start your work day (or for my friends across the pond, practically end it). You won’t be disappointed.

I Love Mondays: Air France

14 Mar

I’m feeling like crap on a stick today, so I needed some real motivation to wake up. It was quite an uneventful weekend, actually, save a few food moments (waffles, espresso, and Mexican food – though not all at once), but I came out of it feeling exhausted, pained, and quite lost actually. Don’t ask me why. It’s probably just one.of.those.days.

But it doesn’t have to continue that way. You see, I may not feel so hot, but that doesn’t mean my music has to reflect what’s going on inside. In fact, it should do quite the opposite. As per usual, this I <3 Mondays post is here to save the day – literally!

I am a little late on this one, having spent the past week playing with my mixer/controller and neglecting the music blogs, soundclouds, and sites for a moment in order to focus on practicing and putting together the March podcast, BUT I found this gem yesterday and HAD to post it. It’s been out since late February/early March I believe, but its sound is current (scary, no? a week ago can be late in the world of electronic music trends?!?!!) and quite…unexpected.

It’s by Art Nouveau and is titled “Air France” in reference to their new EP release of the same name. With a name like that, I was thinking it would be a mellow, relaxing, 20,000 feet high smooth kind of mix, but these 45 minutes of music are nothing but. The “Air France” mixtape is energetic and high impact–definitely enough to wake you up, keep your spirits high, and get you through the best day of the week. Happy Monday!

I Love Mondays: Alan Braxe

28 Feb

Alan Braxe

It’s Monday! I can feel it in my bones. It starts to creep up on Friday night when I realize that the weekend is moving faster than I thought. Then Sunday comes and I know that Monday is only a few hours away. But thanks to good music and a positive attitude, I don’t hate Mondays quite so much anymore :-)

But sometimes, picking the music I listen to on Monday mornings or afternoons can be a bit difficult. Depending on the time of day, my needs vary as does my mood. Monday morning comes like a brick being dropped right on my forehead as my eyes literally hurt as I wake up. The key element of surviving the next few hours is an energy booster. Something not TOO jumpy, but with just enough life to revive me. By the afternoon, I practically need my heart shocked to stay awake, so the music must generally be super high in energy and not sleep-inducing in the slightest.

The mix I’ve chosen this week follows suit, with just enough motivation to get you through your morning and afternoon. This set comes to us care of French pop/electronica sensation Alan Braxe. He just played at Sao Paulo’s Vegas Club this weekend (a show I hate that I wasn’t there to see in person!), and I found this mix on their sister bar Volt’s facebook page. Thank goodness for modern technology.

This mix is bright, optimistic, and joyful, rarely descending into dark moments and keeping an upbeat tone throughout, aka a perfect mix for Monday morning, when most of our spirits are pretty low. I hope that you enjoy this as much as I did:

I Love Mondays: Disco Down

22 Feb

Junior C (photo courtesy of deepbeep.com)

It’s always hard to come back after a long weekend. I am the first person to admit it. I actually am not a big fan of Mondays, but I don’t see why we give up on just one day of the week and celebrate the others. Every day can be a party. After all, all the negativity is just in your head.

Sure, you have to go back to work after a few days off, but having a job in this economy should be celebration enough. At least your bank account will thank you. So today, a mere 24 hours beyond Presidents’ Day, take this opportunity to turn your Monday into something fun, even if just with a little music.

For this week’s I <3 Mondays (on a Tuesday), I’ve put up a smooth disco mix from the likes of Junior C (via Deep Beep), who began DJing in clubs at just 17! He sites Mau Mau (a Brazilian DJ whom we’ve profiled here before) as an influence, so if you liked that set, you are in for a treat.

Though the set begins with disco, and you can feel its influence throughout, the mix goes into light house, soul, and other sounds that will help keep you afloat on your favorite day of the week. Enjoy the set, and have a happy Tuesday (as Monday):

I Love Mondays: Don’t Stay In

31 Jan

Kim Ann Foxman

I was reading Discobelle yesterday and came across a fabulous mix by Hercules & Love Affair’s Kim Ann Foxman. She has garnered lots of attention on her own as of late with her single “Creature,” which we covered here a while back and from her various DJ gigs across the globe. With H&LA having come out with a new album, she’s done a promotional mix for the great music blog Don’t Stay In that is perfect for today.

Yup, Monday already. The weekend’s come and gone and your first day of the week in the office might require a little pick me up. For those of who who go into work a little later, this is perfect for getting dressed to as well. Foxman’s mix is filled with house sounds  - even those of the new variety have a classic 90s vibe to match that of the new album Blue Songs (See link below to listen to ALL the tracks! My fave is “Can’t Wait.”). Enjoy, and Happy Monday!

I Love Mondays: Greg Paulus

23 Jan

DJ Greg Paulus

A few months ago, I went to the famed Marcy Hotel to hear several DJs play for the sporadic (yet excellent) Wolf + Lamb party in Brooklyn. The venue was amazing and the DJs were all super skilled, but I kept lamenting the fact that I couldn’t find any of their sets online. Fortunately, I came across this mix from Greg Paulus (a live recording of his set from his night at the Marcy) c/o the guys in Soul Clap.

Thanks goodness for the internet.

Anyway, I felt like it was a great mix for that sluggish back-t0-work mood many folks will be in tomorrow morning. Yes, it’s Monday again, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. It just means that the weekend has a new name and a few more obligations. This set is soulful and mellow, as I suggested above, but it’s uptempo enough to keep you from totally falling asleep on your commute or as you get ready.

Enjoy:

I Love Mondays: Dreaming…at your desk?

18 Jan

It’s the Tuesday after MLK day, which means the dream he had might be your nightmare this afternoon. Yes, the 3-day weekend is over, and there you are on the subway, then at your desk…then at your desk…then…you get the idea. There’s nothing worse than a Monday except maybe a Tuesday serving as its surrogate. The first day of the week is always hard, but there is more than coffee than can keep you awake during your post-lunch afternoon slump.

If you follow Retail DJ, you already know what the answer to that is: music, but of course. For today’s I <3 Mondays, I decided that instead of posting a mix, I’d post a few of the tracks I’ve been listening to/previewing this week. More mixes to come soon, but here are some songs that will help keep you awake for the next few hours (click to play):

I Love Mondays: Ka§par

10 Jan

It’s that time of the day when lunch is over, but work is not. In other words, you’re in need of a boost. As most of you are still sticking to your new year’s resolutions (for now, at least), I don’t recommend sugar or coffee. Instead, reach for the play button on this fantastic mix.

Retail DJ featured artist Ka§par just did some great work for FACT Magazine Portugal, and is the fifth installment of their new mix series. The mix features several of his own creations and many other lounge-friendly tracks to take your mind out of the office and place it safely in the club. Enjoy this and have a Happy Monday!

I Love Mondays: Snowed In

28 Dec

For those of you who live in the Northeast, everything has been a bit downhill since Christmas. The “snowpocalypse,” as journalists have dubbed one the biggest and most debilitating blizzards in the past few years, has left many of you in the cold – both literally and figuratively. Considering that yesterday didn’t even count as an actual day, as many of you were stuck indoors or even underground, today is an honorary Monday.

Personally speaking, I fortunately went grocery shopping in the early afternoon on the 26th, surprisingly encountering few fellow store patrons the day after Christmas. My guess is that they wanted to avoid the potential post-holiday crowds (sale mongers, gift returners). Beyond this slight shock, I was far more flabbergasted by the simple fact that the meteorologists finally got it right: they said it would snow, and snow it did. With a fun case of food poisoning and no heat or hot water, my 26th and 27th were an adventure to say the least. But if I am thankful for anything, it’s that I didn’t have to wake up early this morning and attempt to ride any of the subways (which were initially suspended and then, once running, plagued by major delays) or the buses (one of which I witnessed get stuck in a snow embankment for so long that the passengers just got out and walked) in order to get to work.

For those of you who did, however, or even those of you who just need something to keep your hearts warm or your soul entertained as you shovel away blankets of snow, I give you the latest mix by Neoteric.

He put together 2 sets, one “Deep,” one “Club,” both excellent, for Mowgli’s Deadfish podcast that I listened to for hours on repeat immediately after the download. Considering that many of you will be out working hard, be it at work in the office or in the front yard, I knew you needed something strong. Neoteric’s 2-part mix will surely do the trick.

Here are his thoughts on the matter:

“There’s just too much good music out there! I had to make two mixes. The first is a bit deeper, some grown up house, but it’ll still make your feet move. The 2nd is some hype ass club shit! But all of these are amazing tracks, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! Listen for some big demos and exclusives scattered throughout!

I Love Mondays: Bigger Than The Bloggosphere

7 Nov

Charles Darkly

This weekend, like many others, seemed to fly by. October is already gone and November seems steps away from completion even though it just began. On top of all this, Monday is tomorrow, which for many means a return to reality and punching a clock.

But never fear – Retail DJ is here (feel free to deduct cool points for that line). On Friday, I did some heavy music exploration and came from the trenches with a heck of a lot. The first of my findings? A mix by Jackmode Agency-supported artist Charles Darkly.

Some of you may recall my love for Jackmode artists, but let me drop some names to remind you: Roundtable Knights, Justin Martin, Oliver $, Idiotproof, Zombie Disco Squad, and Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team (aka some of my favorite DJs/producers). Charles Darkly, much like his agency-mates, may also be familiar to you, though not under this moniker. Some of you may know him from his “You Can Call Me Pelski” mixes and blog, which happens to have a similar mission as ours:

The genre is already dispersed and scrutinized by vast throngs of scenester bloggers. The difference with this blog? I will only post the best music – none of the ‘throw-away’ fashionista rubbish clogging up so many blogs.

Gotta love the blogs that care.

Anyway, check out his latest mix “Bigger Than the Bloggersphere” and get to downloading. This will keep you awake and energized on Monday and for the rest of your work-week. Enjoy!

I Love Mondays: Hangover Remedy

31 Oct

Ah, the Monday after Halloween. Though I myself did not go crazy this weekend (just a few mellow parties here and there), I am sure some of you are going to be feeling the burn this Monday, and I mean burn by way of all the acid reflex post-candy overdosing fun, upset stomach from all the alcohol, and a headache or two. Yes, all that sugar plus alcohol means nothin’ but hangover, so I am sure you all will need a whole lot of coffee at the start of this week, and not just because you’ll be exhausted. That said, I don’t want to frighten you all back into the work-week with something that would compel sensory overload. This Monday, you’re going to have to ease back into the groove, and what better way to do that than with a funky mix by Vancouver-based DJ Neoteric?

For some reason, Canada seems to be producing some of the best DJs in the game. Maybe it’s the water? Socialized healthcare? Who knows. Whatever it is, it works, and I hope they keep on putting out more where these came from. Neoteric’s been around for some while, producing and mixing his way around the blog and club scene, and frequently introducing his listeners to some of the most fun and interesting tracks/sets I’ve ever heard. His sound is diverse, yet consistent in that you have no doubt before pressing play that it’s gong to be good.

This mix he did for Los Angeles’ world-famous dance party The Do Over is no different. It’s a rich set filled with a little bit of house (Detroit and Chicago had their hands deep in this one), some 90s hip hop, and a lot of funk. Check it out, and by that, I mean play AND download. You will be very sad if you don’t.

I Love Mondays: Clusterf*ck

24 Oct

Halloween is right around the corner, and despite my having already chosen what to be (a year ago, actually) and which parties to go to, my friends are a bit all over the place, completely unsure of what they will dress up as and where they will spend their costumed nights. This Monday is the start of what will surely be a crazy week in NYC for many people beyond my friends. With this thought at the forefront before all the others, I felt that the mix for Monday should be something equally as chaotic, yet at the same time just as fun!

For this I <3 Mondays mix, I’ve decided on a mix by Sammy Bananas that is quite the clusterf*ck, though I mean that in the nicest possible way. It’s a mix of almost every single genre known to man, and has so much energy that it can bring the spirit out of the most mortal of Mondays. I hope it helps you start yours on a much happier note!

I Love Mondays: Mau Mau

18 Oct

When I lived in Brazil, I’d often find myself spending weekends in Sao Paulo, where Vegas Club became my second home. Considering the incredibly talented artists that come through that place on a regular basis, I consider myself fortunate to have been able to experience it first-hand on such a regular basis.

This morning, thanks to the folks over at deep beep, a Brazilian electronic music site, I was able to open my first day working on Retail DJ on a full-time basis with an amazing mix from Sao Paulo legend and one of Vegas Club’s resident DJs: Mau Mau.

In collaboration with deep beep and several Brazilian DJs, Nike Airmax has introduced a solid mix and interview series that covers several genres and profiles some of Brazil’s most influential producers and DJs. For Mau Mau’s feature and mix, he has chosen to go his usual route: house, breaks, and percussion-fueled progressive. A former b-boy, Sao Paulo-based Mau Mau includes a little bit of the street in his sound and just enough variety to make your speakers (and your body) shake and bounce.

I feel that it’s going to be a great week, and for the first time in a long time, I can say that the title “I love Mondays” is not uttered with tongue in cheek. I mean it this time. I love Mondays, and I hope this mix helps you love yours a little too:

I Love Mondays: Exquisite

11 Oct

Dj Nibc

Good morning, all. I write you as I take a break at work. Yes, you read that correctly. I am at work. It’s Columbus Day, but my job doesn’t honor it–albeit, 5good reason, but nevertheless still leaving me jealous of all my corporate office peers who have the day off. Unlike them, I had to find some motivation to get out of bed, get dressed, and get on the train bright and early, and who better to give me a little soul lifting than DJ Nibc?

Well known for mixes that never cease to impress and amaze, Gothernburg-born, Berlin-based DJ Nibc serves as the perfect curator for this Monday. For those of us who have to work, we need a little motivation, and for those of you who are off, you may need a little relaxation. Luckily, DJ Nibc’s mix at the Exquisite Show for Ibiza Global Radio packs enough for both. It’s difficult to describe, in that it traverses from Afrobeat to pop, from R&B to house, and from jazz to funk in the span of an hour effortlessly, but it reminds the listener that music, when in the hands of a professional, is truly exquisite.

Happy Monday!

I Love Mondays: Hardhouse

20 Sep

Hardhouse Banton

I had a phenomenal weekend thanks to the one and only Runaway (whose Let’s Play House party on Friday changed my life), a lot of relaxation, and the Brazilian restaurant Beco, where Kristal and I jumped headfirst into the planning stages of the 1-yr anniversary party for Retail DJ. It’s going to be a very busy week, and I need some good music to usher me through it.

Though I have the day off to do some fashion-related coverage, I still need something to motivate me through the day (and in this case,  help me as I get ready as well). Fortunately, Hardhouse Banton, with his Fabriclive Promo Mix came to the rescue.

I just found this mix on soundcloud.com, having been released a mere 4 hours ago. This is a super new mix, with a fresh sound to match. Hardhouse Banton switches seamlessly from dancehall, garage, tech house, UK funky, and back,  making it the perfect mix for everyone’s roughest day. Enjoy this, and happy Monday!
