Get Dressed to This: Last Night, A DJ Saved My Life

6 Aug

Last night, The Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase took place at B.East. I had an amazing time, as did the many guests who came out to show their support for the DJs, the site, and for the people who put forth a lot of hard work to make it happen! It’s hard for me to put into words how proud I felt to see the realtime articulation of this site out there on the dance floor, but I felt it in my soul last night, as I was on the verge of tears watching so many people enjoy themselves and really get into the beautiful venue, the positive vibe, and, of course, the music.

For tonight’s Get Dressed to This, I wanted to show those who were there (and those of you who missed out) exactly what I wore and where I bought it. After lots of compliments for the outfit, I thought it’d be more than fitting to give credit to the artists and stores who made it all happen.

Of course, I wouldn’t be able to tell the story of my outfit without a little music in the background, and what better music to use as I narrate than the music of DJ Shomi Noise. While she was unable to play at the event live, she was kind enough to create a mix for the party. Shomi’s “Ghost Set” was used as the DJs transitioned from one set to the next, making the plugging in of wires and readjustment of mixers not so quiet and boring. Now it’s yours to play and download to recreate a little piece of last night’s magic in your own home!

Without much further ado, here’s the final piece of the Get Dressed to This Megapost. The party is over, but the look and the sound last forever. Get Dressed to This:

Get Dressed to This: Late Night Groove

3 Aug

B.East, venue for the Retail DJ "Get Dressed for This" Showcase

One thing that I considering one of my personal values is always giving credit when it’s due. Above all else, I find that it’s important to recognize people for their talent, for their contributions, and for their hard work. I don’t give people praise whom I don’t feel deserve it. I take that seriously here at Retail DJ, especially considering the hundreds of songs and mixes I listen to on a daily basis, filtering out all the crap so that you all can get nothing but the goods.

I say all of this because the mixes I have included this week for the Get Dressed to This Megapost leading up the big event really all are great and have some meaning to me. For today’s mix, I have a set that came to me by way of EZRAKH. I asked him if he could put together something especially for this, and he created this phenomenal mix without hesitation (and in such a short time frame, might I add). This mix is a follow up to his first Late Night Grooves Mix, which you can find HERE. In volume two, he pulls out all the stops, turning it into a curated audio museum of house music, ranging from the American Chicago/Detroit style to French House to the more recent incarnation of tech house. Infused with some soul and funk, the mix as a whole is a complete work and one that is truly reflective of the type of music you will hear from him Wednesday night (though, to be sure, this is just a sampling – you ain’t heard nothin’ yet until you see him play live).

In terms of the outfit, I’ve put together what would have been my outfit for the party. This dress was the runner up for tomorrow night, but I chose another dress at the last minute. This dress has a few grooves of its own, which you can see if you do a zoom on the AllSaints site. With slight texturing and subtle blue and peach stripes, this dress, though delicate in color, is heavy on the tailoring, with the rigid draping (oxymoronic, yes, but accurate) going on inside and out.

Anyway, check out the awesomeness and Get Dressed to This:

Get Dressed to This: Lovely Layers

2 Aug

In this 6th installment of the special Get Dressed to This megapost leading up to the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase on Wednesday, I thought I’d focus on a favorite of mine in both music and fashion: layers.

In the fall, I love playing with proportion and layers to create a distorted effect – obscuring the body and bringing the focus entirely to the clothes, the many intricacies of each part of the outfit heightened by the fact that they came in folds, layers, and levels. With each movement–a turn here, a twist there–the outfit becomes reborn. The music I like is often the same way–heavily layered, that is. I like music that starts off simply then adds on itself until it’s something with far more depth than initially anticipated. Daft Punk’s Homework is a perfect example of this, with each song technically having so many within it thanks to the introduction of hidden beats and changes within the track. Solo’s recent mix via Jackmode does similar work, adding surprise details here and there to each minute of the mix, creating a layered effect of its own.

Without much further ado, jump into the fold, and Get Dressed to This:

Get Dressed to This: Summoned by the Bard

1 Aug

MC Bard in da house?

In medieval Gaelic and British culture (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Brittany and Cornwall) a bard was a professional poet, employed by a patron, such as a monarch or nobleman, to commemorate the patron’s ancestors and to praise the patron’s own activities.

- Wikipedia entry

When I think of bards and traveling minstrels for that matter, I wonder about the professional equivalent, and know without a doubt that it’s the DJ. Imagine, 300 years from now, kids reading about their artistic predecessors in school and their fancy gadgets like turntables, Serato, and mixers. I can see it now: “The DJ was a professional musicial, employed by a patron, such as a nightclub, promoter, or even homeowner, to commemorate the patron’s special day/event and to praise the patron’s activities by way of their pre-event promotions and possible music choices during the event.”

It’s scary to think about, but it’s true. One day, just like the bard, the DJ might be a thing of the past. As enjoying music becomes less and less a communal activity (think about it: you can have a party via ipod right on the train at your own disposal where you pick your own music and don’t have to worry about anyone leaving early or showing up late), I wonder will DJs ever become obsolete. I hope not, but in the meantime, I want to honor one whose work is truly classic.

I know I am always shouting out Ka§par here on the site, but I can’t help it; the man is talented. For tonight’s Get Dressed to This, the 5th installment of the series leading up to the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase on August 4th, I thought I’d pay a little homage to a modern bard and give equal credit to the store where I found the perfect dress for the party. So take a step into the modern past, if you will, and Get Dressed to This:

Get Dressed to This: In the Trenches

31 Jul

Hello, boys and girls. This is the 4th installment of “Get Dressed to This” leading up to the Retail DJ Get Dressed for This” Showcase at B.East! August 4th is SO close, but never fret; I still have 4 more special edition posts coming up for you before the event!

For tonight’s Get Dressed to This, I’ve decided to put you readers in the trenches, literally! I found this beautiful dress at AllSaints Spitalfields that is a modern, sartorial remix if you will on the trench coat. According to their site, the Amka Trench Dress is ” has an extreme funnel neck and is inspired by traditional trench coats with heavy topstitching and lapels details at neck.” Though it’s no longer available on the site in black (which is the dress color I am featuring tonight), you can find it in dark brown, if the design suits your fancy. I love this dress because its silhouette is slightly vintage and almost military-style, but the asymetry and draping, despite its sturdy fabric, make it all the more modern. Depending of the accessories, you can look like a spy, femme fatale, or wartime reporter–either way, you can’t lose.

Speaking of modern, for tonight’s mix, I’ve got a set created for Slutty Fringe (great blog, check it out) by Lostbahnhof that does quite the modern musical tailoring of house, breakbeat, and new wave style tracks that cannot be missed. The mix takes a few minutes to warm up, but once it does, its deep trip into jacked grooves will make you march to the beat of a different drum (machine).

So anyway, have a good time tonight, but before you do, Get Dressed to This:

Get Dressed to This: My Humps

29 Jul

Fergie Ferg? Nah . . .

This is day two in the countdown until the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase and I came prepared and bearing gifts: my humps.

In this case, when I say “my humps,” I am not talking about that Black Eyed Peas song with Fergie at the helm, I am talking about a twisted, structured take on the tulip dress by AllSaints Spitalfields and a fabulous  mix by Camel that incorporates tech house and classic house with such smooth grace that it gave me chills on a hot and humid day.

Though this dress and its structure is quite rigid and dark (the dress is stiff and corsetted at the waist and more pronounced areas), the cut is still sexy without losing its charm. It can be dressed down with more brightly colored jewelry or made more intense with darker metals and accessories. Considering that this set of Get Dressed to This posts are about easing you all into fall, I figured I’d make a compromise with a light yet intense approach :-)

I hope you enjoy this mix and outfit as much as I had picking them!

Get Dressed to This: Gothic Goodness

28 Jul

As promised, I am adding a Get Dressed to This post each night leading up to the Retail DJ Get Dressed for This Showcase on August 4th!

This first installment involves a mix that comes to us c/o the Round Table Knights. Their live set at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona packs in a ton of soulful house grooves and techno that will make you feel sexy as you get ready to go out and remind you that even after a long day’s work, your energy level is all in your head (as this mix will surely elevate it.

There is no tracklist, but trust me on this one, if you like good music, you’ll like this set.

In addition to the killer music, I’ve put together a chic yet playful outfit with the central piece from AllSaints Spitalfields. It’s perfect for any parties that lead into the fall, combining the fun of summer plaid with the subtle hues of autumn. Though layered and form-fitting, the item is made of light-weight wool and is smooth on the body, allowing the skin to breathe as one moves.

Enjoy, and see you August 4th!

Get Dressed to This: Mega Post!

28 Jul

In anticipation of the Retail DJ “Get Dressed for This” Showcase on August 4th, I am putting up a new “Get Dressed to This” each and every night between now and the party!

Why the switch in prepositions, you may ask? Well, during the “Get Dressed to This” post, I include a great mix for you to listen to while you are getting ready to go out, something for you to get dressed TO, plus an outfit to inspire you as you put together your own. But for this party, the DJs and the mixing will be live, right before your eyes and ears, so it’s something you’ll need to get dressed FOR. The event is the end result.

This week, I want to build your excitement for the Get Dressed for This Showcase with a mix each night and a new outfit to get ready for fall. Yes, fall! It’s right around the corner, so some of the outfits during this week’s megaposting will be to inspire you for the upcoming season.

I listened to hundreds of songs and mixes as of late to filter out all the garbage and put up only the best, so you have a lot to look forward to! A bulk of the clothing will be by ALLSAINTS SPITALFIELDS as a thank you to them for a) supplying beautiful clothes, but also b) for being the one place to meet my dress needs for the party!  They are truly a godsend.

So get ready, folks. A nightly set of music and fashion is coming your way starting tonight, so be on the lookout!

Beijos!

Did I Tell You I Was Throwing an 8-Hour Party?

23 Jul

Well, I am.

Get Dressed to This: Kitsch Lite

17 Jul

Every now and then, a little tacky goes a long way, and this touch of low-class chic is something that Americans seem to have down pat. After having a discussion this Friday with a French friend in fashion (how’s that for alliteration?) about the lack of style in American fashion, I got to thinking about the things we’re good at. We’re the ones who gave the world hip hop (and the “street” style therein), we do ghetto chic like no other, and we have a pretty good handle on casual. Luckily, all of the aforementioned looks are perfect for summer.

For this week’s Get Dressed to This, I’ve decided to put together a look that’s a tiny bit kitsh, but a lot of fun. With high-waisted shorts, a bright necklace, and platforms, anyone would be a traffic stopper in this trailer park meets SoHo getup. Along for the ride is the music of DJ Arq(uimedes) aka Marlon Oliva, a talented DJ whom I had the opportunity to hear spin at Santos on Thursday night. Though the mix is labeled for spring, it has a ton of jams that will surely help motivate us as we put ourselves together in our cutest summer styles. Get Dressed to This:

Get Dressed to This: Vaiiiii Brasil!!!!

30 Jun

Ok, ok, the US may have gotten knocked out, but that by no means signifies the end of the hung soccer fervor that is (slowly, but surely) sweeping the nation. While I fully backed Portugal, they too, are out, so for me, there is only the ultimate, all-time favorite left: Brazil.

They could have uniforms made of heavy chain mail and probably still lay the smack down on the field. They are the Lakers of futebol, the Rolling Stones of Copa. You can’t help but love them, and I love them by default just from being such a Brazil enthusiast.

I have covered some fancier World Cup (non-jersey) wares before, but now I have put together a simple, yet fun outfit for cheering by day, then going to the afterparty and getting down até o chão by night. Considering that my initial approach to thinking about World Cup fan gear was different, so is the way I think of the music to get me pumped for it. I love funk carioca/baile funk and cover it non-stop here on Retail DJ, but what I really appreciate is an artist who has the ability to take funk carioca, which is simple in form, and turn it into something beautiful and interesting.

Beyond those whom I have highlighted before, one such artist is Kassiano, who is well-known in NYC for his “I <3 Baile Funk” party revolution (which he took on with DJ Sujinho) that was popular a few years back, and in more recent years, his work with local NYC via Brazil acts like Zuzuka Poderosa and even more mainstream acts like Li’l Jon and Pitbull. His newest mix includes funk carioca favorites, but also plenty of other styles to keep even those who are not majorly into funk carioca with their ears open (seriously – he manages to work Li’l Jon, Manu Chao, Rye Rye, Oliver $, and Riva Starr into the same mix with all the funk carioca….nuts).

Get Dressed to This: Back In One Piece

25 Jun

It’s officially summer, and the thermostat agrees. Fortunately, there’s always the prospect of hanging at the pool to prevent complete and utter overheating and subsequent evaportation in the sun. The funny part about the turn in swimwear fashion as of late is that even though the temperature calls for showing more skin, there are some sexy suits out there that cover us up. Thanks to the re-launching and complete overhaul of the one-piece, underwater fashion has taken on quite the twist.

To get ready for a pool party or a beach outing, you definitely will need some music to get your energized and excited about taking a deep dive or even a shallow dip. This mix will surely help you get your groove on before having a great day under the sun. Get dressed to this . . .

Get Dressed to This: Cut It Out

10 Jun

There has been a reinstatement of sorts of the cut-out trend. Sometimes, it’s done pretty poorly, making the person who chooses to wear it look more like an extra from Pretty Woman’s streetwalking shots than a forward-thinking fashion maven. Nevertheless, there are tasteful version out there, and particularly dress styles that are flattering for a variety of body types. In fact, it makes me think of some forms of house. House music, as treated by mainstream clubs, often tends to take on a more cheesy, overly buzzy quality that lacks depth or really any thought. The sounds are repetetive and bland, and ultimately sound good only if you are bored (or drunk) out of your mind. Nevertheless, some DJs out there have mastered the art of maintaining the integrity of house even in mixes for more mainstream audiences. For this week’s Get Dressed to This, I give you a combination of both. Enjoy!

Get Dressed to This: Carte Blanche

27 May

The term Carte Blanche, when translated, means “blank check” but the expression means the right to do basically whatever you want. . . Entrusted with extreme authority to exercise your power in a way that you see fit. . .

That said, Carte Blanche is the perfect name for the duo that has formed between two phenomenal DJs, Riton and DJ Mehdi, who exercise their power as musical greats to create tracks and mixes worthy of stopping time for a listen or two.

I am a longtime follower and fan of both, so it’s no surprise that I loved what’s come out of their collaborative work. Riton is probably best known of late for the tracks that he’s done with British pop star Primary 1 and Mehdi best known for his participation under the umbrella management group Ed Banger Records. Both, however, have been making amazing music for a very very very long time, their individualsCVs overflowing with years of experience in both DJing and producing a variety of genres from hip hop and soul to  house and minimal techno.

A few weeks back, they blessed the world with a mix that I honestly could not get out of my head. Every song has such meaning for me, as one track or another reminds me of some period in my life, of my own musical awakening and growth. Much like the Quinten 909 mix I featured yesterday, this Carte Blanche “House Party Mix” delivers the goods for heavy duty music connoisseurs AND newbies. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I do. . .

But going back to the concept of Carte Blanche, every now and then, we need that creative license in our fashion too. We need to be able to feel like we can get away with wearing WHATEVER,a nd what better a place and time than the parties of tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday? That’s why today’s “Get Dressed to This” is solely a mix. I want the music to inspire you to create something amazing – your own blank check if you will – for the weekend of parties ahead.

Get Dressed to This: Shifty

20 May

Shift dresses are perfect for the entire year. Chameleons in their own right, shift dresses look boring on the hanger, fairly square and lifeless, but once worn, they take on the shape of the wearer and can be well-manipulated by accessories to fit any body type. The summer shift dress tends to be a little looser fitting and of thinner material of course, but it still bears the quality of being adaptable for all. Speaking of adaptability, this week’s Get Dressed to This mix comes by way of XLR8R (yes, I know I have been sweating them hard as of late, but a TON of their new posts are pure treasures) from a DJ named Ben UFO who, as Shawn Reynaldo of XLR8R notes with amazing accuracy, has quite a mutability of his own:

The world of electronic music is filled with quirks, but one of the most confusing is the fact that so many DJs only get attention if they also produce tracks. If someone has banged out a quality tune or two—and in some cases, the “quality” requirement is optional—they can quickly find themselves DJing around the globe, regardless of whether or not they are actually any good behind the decks. On the flip side, there are amazing DJs whose talents go unnoticed simply because they’ve never slapped their name on a song or remix. For a genre where clubs and parties take center stage, it seems like the system has been flipped on its head. Nevertheless, a select few still manage to break through based solely on their DJ skills. That group includes young Ben UFO (a.k.a. Ben Thomson), co-founder of the London-based Hessle Audio label. His top-notch DJ sets, usually combining the freshest funky, garage, and 2-step sounds with a choice selection of classic dubstep, house, and techno, have been blowing minds for a while now . . .

That said, enjoy this set and outfit as I invite you along to Get Dressed to This . . .

Get Dressed To This: Good Ship Lollipop

13 May

The nautical look always resurfaces for spring, but it’s often a little overdone and cliche. I wanted to put together a look today that looks more like cute cruise guest than pirate or an Anything Goes extra. The look always needs a little modernizing, so by way of these fun Melissa shoes and a more up-to-date take on the bow-style collar, this nautical look will help you dance the night away. As will this mix by Star Eyes, awesome NYC singer/DJ whom you can always rely on for an amazing night. Get Dressed to This: Jump Around

6 May

Jumpsuits often get a bad wrap. Despite coming in so many different varieties, making them perfect for almost any and every body type, especially if accessorized properly, people tend to dog on them. The main reason for this might be because people are wearing jumpsuits cut for body types different from their own. Jumpsuits are perfect for the spring and summer, especially for dancing, and if the jumpsuit has a print, it can speak for itself, sans a lot of accessories. Here’s and old mix from DJ Neoteric and a fun outfit, both of which will give you something to jump around about!

Get Dressed to This: Outer Space

30 Apr

This morning, during my commute to work (which, as of late, has been the only time I have had to review music for this site . . . sigh), I came across a mix that just made me think of space. It could be because I was watching Danny Boyle’s highly underrated film Sunshine, which is about a spaceship crew that is burdened with the task of saving the Earth from utter obliteration by reviving the dying sun. But I also think it has something to do with the mere fact that I spend so much time packed into small spaces. Nothing is vast, and everything that happens in my life seems to take place in small spaces, inches away from someone else’s armpit or centimeters below someone’s magazine. It’s all in context really, but when I think about day to day existence, particularly with the coming of higher temperatures, I think of tightly packed subterranean suffocation and the need to break from that, the relief of being above ground, and the dream of floating in the vast openness of the sky.

When I was little, I had the occupational dream of being an astronaut, though mainly because of the fashionable uniform and the prospect of eating space ice cream on a regular basis. Between then and now, my job desires have shifted quite drastically, but my interest in metallic wares remained in tact. On that note, I present to you this week’s Get Dressed to This feature. The music is a mix by London-based DJ Stopmakingme that has been making its rounds on the blogs. I chose it because something about it screams “space robot” like no other, making it one of the most fitting choices for the futuristic, borderline-spacegear ensemble I’ve put together for this post. Enjoy!

Get Dressed to This: Wolf in Lamb’s Clothing

24 Apr

For this week’s Get Dressed to This, I’ve got the boys in mind again. Though it’s definitely a challenge for me to find interesting clothes for men to go out in, particularly considering that men’s clothing, while usually well-tailored, varies less, I am open to posting what I would wear if I one day woke up and were in a man’s body. It’s fitting that I should say that considering that today’s mix comes to us from Wolf + Lamb, the amazing record label and promotion group based in NYC that works with amazing DJs to put out stellar music. When I think of Wolf + Lamb, I happen to think of the common saying that one is like, “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” If I were a guy out on the town, I think I’d end up going for that look: good boy on the outside, bad boy on the inside. . .
