Get Dressed to This: Vaiiiii Brasil!!!!

30 Jun

Ok, ok, the US may have gotten knocked out, but that by no means signifies the end of the hung soccer fervor that is (slowly, but surely) sweeping the nation. While I fully backed Portugal, they too, are out, so for me, there is only the ultimate, all-time favorite left: Brazil.

They could have uniforms made of heavy chain mail and probably still lay the smack down on the field. They are the Lakers of futebol, the Rolling Stones of Copa. You can’t help but love them, and I love them by default just from being such a Brazil enthusiast.

I have covered some fancier World Cup (non-jersey) wares before, but now I have put together a simple, yet fun outfit for cheering by day, then going to the afterparty and getting down até o chão by night. Considering that my initial approach to thinking about World Cup fan gear was different, so is the way I think of the music to get me pumped for it. I love funk carioca/baile funk and cover it non-stop here on Retail DJ, but what I really appreciate is an artist who has the ability to take funk carioca, which is simple in form, and turn it into something beautiful and interesting.

Beyond those whom I have highlighted before, one such artist is Kassiano, who is well-known in NYC for his “I <3 Baile Funk” party revolution (which he took on with DJ Sujinho) that was popular a few years back, and in more recent years, his work with local NYC via Brazil acts like Zuzuka Poderosa and even more mainstream acts like Li’l Jon and Pitbull. His newest mix includes funk carioca favorites, but also plenty of other styles to keep even those who are not majorly into funk carioca with their ears open (seriously – he manages to work Li’l Jon, Manu Chao, Rye Rye, Oliver $, and Riva Starr into the same mix with all the funk carioca….nuts).

Without further ado, Get Dressed to This (caution: may cause involuntary booty popping):

Retail DJ June Podcast

30 Jun

For the Retail DJ June Podcast, I wanted to include tracks that would make you dance, but also music that was mellow enough to listen to as you attempt to cool down despite the ridiculous summer heat. It’s without a doubt a serious mix, with very little room for lighter tracks, but I included a few playful moments just to keep you all entertained. Play it loud, play it proud, and enjoy!

Original Retail DJ January Tracklist Post

Retail DJ Podcast!

29 Jun

Many of you have complained whenever I put up a Retail DJ Tracklist, only having to take down the songs a month later because I didn’t have enough storage space. Let’s just say I’ve found a solution, and I am more than happy to share it with you.

While it’s a long time coming, the Retail DJ Podcast was always in the back of my mind as a goal for the site. Now it’s been realized. That’s right –your favorite tracks, exclusive mixes, and interviews can be found on the Retail DJ Podcast!

Considering the first few tracklists were only available for temporary download, I have gone backwards, beginning with my January tracklist, which I put in an order that made more sonic sense and put together in the first ever Retail DJ Podcast, but never fear! February, March, April, and May tracklists will also have their day very soon, as will some of the Now Playing tracklists.

As per everything else on this site, the Retail DJ Podcast is free and can be played or downloaded here or on the Retail DJ Soundcloud page. I hope you enjoy the podcasts as much as I enjoy making them.

I <3 Mondays: Todd Edwards

27 Jun

This afternoon (which is when I woke up; considering all the partying I have done this week and weekend, I needed a nice, solid sleep), I literally screamed with joy when I saw that the newest XLR8R podcast was featuring New Jersey-born DJ Todd Edwards. He is basically a god within the UK garage scene, even though he’s US-born and bred (how’s that for stickin’ it to the man?). I’ve been in love with his jumpy, biccup-y, breaks-meets-garage-style music for some time now and was thrilled to see I’d have an hour of him to myself.

But I went to Montessori school, so I know the fundamental principles of giving to and sharing with others, and couldn’t let my readers down. For those of you who have not heard of Todd Edwards, be ready for a treat. This music, filled with fun remixes of everything from classic rock to pop and soul will make your Monday, I promise.

Mix On Tap: Shaken Not Stirred

26 Jun

This entire week, I’ve had one mix on repeat for every single night-time outing. It’s full of bass, Portuguese, foul language, and a ton of solid beats. The genre? Funk Carioca, of course.

It’s the staple sound that I always go back to when I need energy to go out after a long day’s work or a weekend’s worth of dancing. Daniel Haaksman’s “Funk Legal” mix is the perfect combo for folks from baile funk beginners to those who have been listening to it for years as it includes some old favorites and well known names in the scene like Deize Tigrona, among many others.

The standout tracks for me is Deize Tigrona’s “Dança  Neguinha,” which is about a woman who needs to take a little more control (“Pega no chicote!” Deize taunts, which means “Grab the whip” in Portuguese) and have fun on the dancefloor, an oddly amusing funk remix of the Austin Powers theme song, and “O Som do James Brown,” a baile funk take on the master himself. Go figure.

Anyway, I’ll let the mix speak for itself. While you’re listening, shake up a little mix of your own by taking it back old school with a classic martini.

Get Dressed to This: Back In One Piece

25 Jun

It’s officially summer, and the thermostat agrees. Fortunately, there’s always the prospect of hanging at the pool to prevent complete and utter overheating and subsequent evaportation in the sun. The funny part about the turn in swimwear fashion as of late is that even though the temperature calls for showing more skin, there are some sexy suits out there that cover us up. Thanks to the re-launching and complete overhaul of the one-piece, underwater fashion has taken on quite the twist.

To get ready for a pool party or a beach outing, you definitely will need some music to get your energized and excited about taking a deep dive or even a shallow dip. This mix will surely help you get your groove on before having a great day under the sun. Get dressed to this . . .

Oops! Missed a Spot

24 Jun

Somehow in a cosmic-sized lapse in memory, I forgot to post one of the big events this week: Holy Ghost! (in their FIRST NYC headlining event!)+ Justin Miller + Neon Indian + Jacques Renault + Stretch Armstrong are performing tonight at Le Poisson Rouge!

It’s not to late to get tickets online (and they are $15 at the door). If you haven’t seen one or more of these guys perform before, please do check them out. Tonight is one of those moments when I wish I had a clone or someone who could be a surrogate version of me, but through whom I could experience everything. Nevertheless, nothing like that has been created yet, so I might need to live vicariously through some of the folks who read Retail DJ and who aren’t crazy tired tonight. GO GO GO!

Special Event: EZRAKH @ House of Yes

23 Jun

I saw EZRAKH perform at House of Yes recently, and homeboy “tore it up,”‘ are we say in the South. He’ll be back again this Friday to DJ for the (Un)official Afro-Punk Fest Kick-off Party. King’s County, Moruf “Moo,” and DJ Chuck will also be performing, so if you’re in Brooklyn or just feel like taking a trip down to Bushwick to dance your ass off, get ‘er done! I can attest that a House of Yes party with EZRAKH at the musical helm is one you will wake up sore from the next day. The party is raw, the beats are contagious, and the vibe is friendly, open, and energetic.

Here’s a little reminder of his skills to get you excited. I recommend you download it considering that EZRAKH is so prolific that before you can download your favorite mix, a new one will be up in its place!)

Make Your Day A Little Smoother

Ka§par

I woke up this morning with a massive headache from the heat. Though there was a slight breeze outside, my room felt like some sort of inferno with a demon at the helm trying to cook me from the inside out. Fortunately, there’s some music out there that helps cool me down, even if it’s just mentally.

I’ve profiled Ka§par’s beats before, but his soundcloud is best for those of you who like your dishes served one course at a time – aka track by track vs a mix. The house is deep, yet soothing to the ear and easy on the mind. It has just enough bass to keep you connected, but is smoothe enough to put you at ease and keep you mellow.

Here’s a sampling, but be sure to check out his page for more info.

Special Event: Girls On Wax

22 Jun

I recently received an email from a set of female DJs who are putting on quite the show tomorrow. From 1-4 pm, DJs Lil Ray, Krunk Pony, and Whitney Day will be doing a live broadcast on UStream in  Brooklyn, and you’re invited!

For more details, check out the facebook event page . If you can plug in your headphones while you’re at the office or blast your speakers at home, more power to you!

To get you excited, here’s more info on the DJs and a little bit of their work:

About Lil Ray:

Lil Ray grew up on the Ft. Lauderdale Bat Mitzvah scene, which might have started her dance party obsession. In 1999, she relocated to Atlanta where she discovered southern style beats and all night underground dance parties. She got behind the decks in 2008 and quickly made a name for herself. She moved to Brooklyn at the end of 2009, and that’s when things really took off. She bounces around NYC every week, playing funky electro, hip hop, booty bass, and whatever weird and wonderful new dance genre she came across the day before.

About Krunk Pony

At 6’2” this glamazon will keep you on your toes. She spins a fluid high energy set that includes tastes of disco, funk, breakbeat, hip-hop, b-more, electro, house and smart re-dits of those guilty pleasure tracks. Known for busting out her clavé or a move on the dance floor–she is soon to be rocking a party near you.

About Whitney Day:

Whitney Day does it for the love of music. A native NYC-er, she began playing and performing music early on while studying at LaGuardia, the ‘FAME’ High School. After graduating college with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, she went back to her music roots to compose and mix music for television & film.

After years in the club and party scene in NYC as a party-goer she made the leap from the dance floor to the decks. With an instinct for reading crowds, she blends her eclectic music taste to create surprising mixes and on-the-fly mash-ups.

I <3 Mondays: Never Enough

21 Jun

It’s Monday, and mine had a rough start. After too much coffee yesterday (and thus total insomnia), I overslept. It reminded me that I don’t have enough energy to do most of the things I need to accomplish in a 24-hour day. Then again, in my attempts to complete so much, I sleep little, beginning the cycle all over again.

But one possible culprit of my energy depletion is the heat. If there’s one thing my body is lacking besides sleep, it’s the cold. I’m a winter person and the heat from summer always tires me out. The fans and the A/C, no matter their strength, are never quite enough.

But if there’s one thing that makes me excited about today being the first day of summer is the fact that music that comes out in the summer is usually the lightest and most fun. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE a deep house track or a dark dubstep set, but sometimes, summer music is all I need.

For today’s I <3 Mondays mix, check out the new promo set by the folks over at Meanbucket. With a series of tracks laced with Caribbean sounds and Latin percussion, This short mix by Quime & Tuco is just enough to get your summer started. Enjoy!

Get Ready With Shomi Noise – The Mix

19 Jun

When Shomi Noise sent me her mix, the first thing I thought was, “I know I am going to love this.” With a tracklist that includes everything from Designer Drugs and South Rakkas Crew to Khia and Estelle, this mix was something to look forward to.

Luckily, my instincts didn’t fail me.  The Get Ready With Shomi Noise  mix is fantastic, and definitely made with the listener in mind. Having included many of her favorite tracks, Shomi Noise created a set that really does work to motivate you as you get ready to go out. The mix is high impact from the start, even though the songs get faster and more intense as the mix goes along. And with a closing track by Brazil’s MC Gi, which still manages to give me chills, this mix comes right in time for tomorrow’s World Cup game between Ivory Coast and my team of choice, Brazil.

I’m super excited to present this mix, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.

Get Ready With Shomi Noise – The Photoshoot

19 Jun

After sitting down for an interview, Shomi Noise was nice enough to take some time from her schedule for us to photograph her. With Union Square as the backdrop and a vibrant wardrobe, Shomi Noise was the perfect subject. With a style that’s inspired by everyone from Interpol to drag queens, from the street to the runway, Shomi Noise channels style through several sources. Take a minute to read more about her style and don’t forget to look at the pictures too as we Get Ready With Shomi Noise!

BEFORE

I heard through the grapevine that you design your own clothes sometimes. Is that true?

Yeah, sometimes I modify stuff that I buy. I got this leather jacket and I thought, “Oh this would look really good if I studded it!” So I just wrote my name in the back. It took HOURS! [laughs] I had to sit there and put them on stud by stud. It looks pretty awesome. Sometimes, when I am bored or stressed, my roommate and I just sit down and do crafts. I’ve started to add little burgers or pizzas to t-shirts. I use felt and stitch random things together. Sometimes I just modify my clothes by cutting the hemline on a skirt, etc.

I’m really into fashion. I think it’s awesome.

How would your characterize your own style, at least, beyond just the cute, crafty stuff?

I am really into bright colors and interesting prints. I like prints. I like punk-y stuff. My style has changed a lot over the years, though now I mainly just identify as a “drag queen.” In the day-to-day, I kinda dress down, but when I go out or when I DJ, I like to put on fake eyelashes, a pretty bright outfit and get glamorous! [laughs]

false eyelashes

Drag queens are my favorite; I think they are the most fabulous people out there and I really admire them!

So how do you channel your inner drag queen? You mentioned fake eyelashes and some extra makeup, but what would be the quintessential Shomi Noise as Drag Queen look?

A headpiece! I just discovered headpieces this past year. I am going to try to explore wigs, maybe! [laughs] The problem with wigs is that they can get hot and itchy, especially in a club. That’s why I bow down to drag queens because it takes so much time to make yourself up and then to put a wig on and rock it! I’m just like, “Wooow!” But yeah, headpieces are awesome. Just having a giant flower on your head is just fun!

flowers on the brain

Being able to be outrageous and owning it, not feeling self conscious, and having the right attitude – that’s what’s important. To have a drag persona or be glamorous, you have to feel it from the inside first.

You have some interesting shoes that I’ve seen you wear. Can you tell us a little about those?

Creepers! Yeah, I got really into creepers. I think around mid-2008, for the fall 2009 collection at London Fashion Week by Armand Basi. He brought them back. Creepers have been around forever, since the 50s, then the punks started wearing them. Basi brought them back, at least for the fashion world, with models wearing Creepers with tube socks pulled down with skirts . . . It just looked awesome, and I thought, “I need to get Creepers!” So I started wearing them. I have a pair that’s black and white and an old black pair, but I’ve gone through so many! I wear them so much.

Creepers!

So that’s how I got into the Creeper. They make you feel good and are super comfortable. They also make you look taller because of the platform. My mom’s always like, “Why are you wearing those Frankenstein shoes?” [laughs]

Is your style really different from your family’s?

Yeah! [laughs] My sister tends to wear very professional, proper, lady clothes. [laughs] My mother is a bit all over the place. She is not really into fashion or style.

Are there any trends you hate?

I just so happened to be walking to my friend’s job and I saw Karl Lagerfeld taking pictures for the Chanel Fall 2010 collection, and it was HORRIBLE [laughs] There was all this fur and lots of brown tones. Brown is NOT my color, so I was not into it, but I noticed that a lot of the trends for fall 2010 involve earth tones and army style. I hate that!

I’ve always been into bright colors and interesting designs. I love Alexander McQueen, and my roommate and I were devastated when we found out he had passed away. I think what he was doing was awesome. I really like things that push the envelope or bring things to the next level. I am into work that challenges the norm and turns everything upside down.

Are there any things you have to keep in mind when you’re putting together an outfit to DJ in?

Yes. Headpieces are awesome, but they don’t work so well with headphones! [laughs] I’ve actually broken a pair of headphones because of a headpiece! With shoes, it’s always better to look taller. Bracelets can get dangerous in terms of moving knobs. Aside from that, I obviously wouldn’t wear giant gloves to DJ! [laughs] Other than that,  it’s pretty open.

In your opinion, how do fashion and music intersect in your life?

I think they go hand in hand. Even rock ‘n’ roll, or beyond that, it’s always been about putting together an image with a sound. I think that’s why fashion is so important in terms of music. It’s also a great way to express yourself. Music and fashion are the way to go if you’re trying to make a statement.

AFTER

What about the process of getting ready? What is that like for you?

I have to figure out what I am going to wear. Sometimes, I just do whatever. Recently, I decided to just put on a tie. I looked like one of the member of Interpol! [laughs] But sometimes when I want to get really decked out, I am less random, and I have to find the right outfit, the right shoes to go with the outfit, etc. I have to figure out what type of makeup I want to put on. . . it takes forever. So usually if I am going to go out, I start getting ready around 7 o’clock, and I don’t leave the house until like 10:30! [laughs] It takes a while, especially when I’m being a “drag queen.”

Do you have a specific order you follow?

Well, usually it involves picking the outfit and putting that aside. Showering is important. [laughs] Then I will do my makeup, which takes the longest, then put on the outfit, the shoes, then I’m out the door.

Any favorite brands?

For lipstick and eye stuff, I’ll use whatever, but for makeup, I use Bare Minerals by Bare Escentuals. It’s good for the skin. My hair is very difficult, so I use John Frieda’s Anti-Frizz Serum. My hair is very thick and has a lot of volume, so I am always trying to tame it. It always depends on where my hair is, length-wise. Right now it’s growing out, and I am trying to come to terms with it! [laughs] But sometimes, when it’s shorter, I’ll put a little bit more product to make it easier to manage.

Do you ever listen to music when you get ready?

Yessss! I always have to listen to music. I really like music that is energetic and that pumps me up. I can’t play soft music when I am about to go out. Otherwise, I will just get bored and want to go to sleep, so I have to play something really fast with a high BPM.

What about the process of getting ready when you’re about to DJ? Is that process different?

Oh yeah! I have to put even more time aside just to make sure that I have all of my gear and that everything is packed. I’ve had moments where I’ve forgotten cables. It’s horrible! So you have to have a checklist that you review, check, and double check to make sure everything’s in there.

I had an anxiety dream the other day actually that I was running late and left the house having forgotten my laptop.

Let’s hope you’re not psychic!

I know!!! It sucks when it rains too. You have to cover everything and make sure nothing gets wet. It’s definitely a different, longer process.

Do you have a special bag or case you put everything in?

No. Right now, I have a bookbag with a Lil Kim patch on it. [laughs]

Is she another music idol of yours?

Yes, I love her.

She is a bit like a drag queen in her own way.

Yeah, she totally is. I don’t like much of her new stuff, but I was really into her work back in the day—her Junior Mafia days. She also did a little tooo much with the plastic surgery. It’s like, “Giiiirrrrl, where’s your face in there?” [laughs]

I think Nicki Minaj is the next big female rapper. A lot of people are saying that. She’s also really feminist, at least in interviews she gives. That’s pretty empowering as well.

Any final thoughts on getting ready for the readers?

I say just be fabulous, be confident, and love yourself. Our culture does not push self love very much. It’s not even there. We live in a culture of self-hatred. I think that people should start loving themselves and being good to themselves. That’s my advice for everyone.

What’s Good? Shomi Noise (Part Three)

How did it go?

I  did it! I just started playing music. I had learned to crossfade properly. I took a crash course on DJing. I did not know as much. I don’t know how I pulled it off! Everybody was dancing. People were really into it. My friends were coming to the DJ booth and jumping up and down! [laughs] That’s when I realized, “Oh, I can do this!” I just knew that I had to keep working and researching technique. After that, people started to ask me to DJ more, so that was good too.

When was the first That’s My Jam party that you played?

I think it was October or November of 2008.

What kind of music did you play when you first started out? You mentioned that at Anonymous, you were playing more Riot Grrrl and punk, so when did you switch to more electronica and hip hop?

It happened progressively. When I first started, I did have some electro stuff thrown in. I would play the Count and Sinden and some remixes, for example. I was also playing a lot of mainstream stuff because I know that’s what a lot of people like to listen to sometimes. At that time, I still wasn’t quite sure what my style was, but then later I got into a wider variety of stuff, and I got really into crunk.

When you think “crunk,” who are some of the artists that come to mind?

Yo Gotti, the G Spot Boys (who did “Stanky Leg”) . . .

Lots of Southern stuff!

Yeah! That’s where it all originated. I also love Rashida, Crime Mob, Lil’ Jon . . .

What’s the general crowd response when you throw in that type of music?

People love it! I DJed for a beauty salon’s holiday party in the Lower East Side to a mainly straight crowd. I thought I’d just play it safe and play lots of pop-y stuff, but then someone came up to me and asked, “Do you have any crunk?” [laughs] I said, “Yeah! As a matter of fact, I love crunk!” So I started playing crunk, and everybody loved it! Sometimes, I even drop crunk tracks at the museum. I get . . . mixed responses, but mainly positive!

Everybody loves pop, so it’s good to throw it in there, but now that I am into more electro stuff, I’m trying to explore that more. It’s easier to beatmatch and mix with electronic music. Also, another thing I do now with pop music, particularly if it’s a track that’s overplayed, is find a really good remix. Eventually, I want to do my own remixes.

So what’s a remix that’s out now that you’ve been using quite a bit?

Crookers did a really good remix of Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s “Telephone.” There’s a part that’s too long that just drags on, but I edited that on Ableton. I know I can just drop this track and people will go crazy because it’s Lady Gaga, but with a twist! It has a harder beat.

I just love finding really good remixes of predictable pop songs. I think that’s what DJing is all about—putting a new spin on music and making it your own . . .

Do any other DJs that come to mind?

Other DJs in the scene I’m in that I’ve worked with and/or really respect include Sirlinda, who is really good! Also, I went to a That’s My Jam party recently where I saw a DJ named Noa D play, who’s amazing. I was really impressed. Also, there’s DJ Ender Wiggin, who is another queer DJ I’ve worked with who’s pretty cool! Another DJ I really like is Helen Harris of OMG Michelle.

Have you ever DJed any mixed-crowd parties or anything outside of the queer community? If so, have you noticed a difference in the response?

Yeah. I’ve DJed at the Rubin Museum, which is an interesting place to DJ because it’s mostly lounge DJing, which is completely different. But it’s good to step outside my box and see how things work out there in the “real world.” [laughs] For a long time, I just said I was only going to do queer parties. It was just kind of a comfort / safety thing for me because, you know, people probably won’t be as condescending, etc. But then I started DJing at the museum, which was interesting because I would get weird responses sometimes, but most of the time, I received really positive feedback.

What do you mean by “weird” responses?

Sometimes, I would get guys who would come up to me and say things like, “Why are you playing this crap? Play something good.” I’d ask, “Like what?” and he’d respond with something like, “Gorillaz.” [laughs] Ooooook… I’ve also had guys come up to me at the Rubin and be like,

“Are you really serious about DJing?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, you know what would make you a better DJ?”
“What?”
“If you took your shirt off.”

I would get really sexist comments sometimes.

Seriously? At the MUSEUM?!?!

Yeah! I mean, there are random crowds of people there, so . . . I’ve experienced sexism from the audience more than from other DJs. But, at the same time, sometimes I’d play something and the most random people would come up to me and give me a compliment. I got a lot of really positive reinforcement while DJing at the museum as well.

That helped me, and it made me think that maybe I should DJ other places, not just the queer party scene. It’s something I want to start doing more of.

So let’s backtrack. How did “Shomi Noise” come about, and how did you become a DJ in the first place?

Summer Jam

18 Jun
Matt Van Schie, thinking about summer?

While Katy Perry’s “California Girls” might be the summer song on the pop charts, my summer jam takes me to some French Riviera lounge or maybe a hip beach resort in Ibiza or a really nice backyard somewhere in Brooklyn. I’m claiming it. Matt Van Schie’s track “Be My Lady” as remixed by Hemingway is going to be my summer jam.
